“What’s going on?” Lanthum said, and he had to shout in order to hear his own words. The den of fissuring rocks and mist of flying sand caused by the rolling earth made visibility low despite Kail’s light. The horses were screaming again, and the shouting and yelling started as well, but mixed in it was a new sound of trolls panicking. Mannen looked on. “Let’s do it,” he said to Kail, and the half elf nodded, a glint of merriment in her eyes.

The Dragonhost released the image as the half elf released hers. Brilliant white light flared all around them to cover the entire Arcadian camp, obliterating every shadow, swallowing all things in its wake. Winye shut her eyes, the white light burning the image of dancing grains at the back of her numb mind. This was not Kail’s magic alone, but Mannen’s as well; a combination of real light and illusion to become a reality that practically doubled the effect induced. Stabbed by its brilliance, the trolls all but fled, running away from the terrible blaze while the sand shifted beneath them like the waves of the sea, gulping them down into its bottomless depth unexpectedly.

“The earth,” Mannen murmured, the little dragon under him shot out breaths of fire in response. “I’ve found him.”

No one noticed the disappearance of the Windsongs and the Hyrules from their midst.

Mustering his most commanding voice, Zuco started issuing orders and within five minutes, his scout came back shouting hoarsely, “Goblins, orcs, behind us!”
At the news of the enemies, the allied forces got back on their feet, eager to fight a lesser horror that was flesh and blood, instead of the dark fear from an unknown realm. Instantly, swords were raised, arrows nocked and pushing the previous event aside, the men spread out in formation, ready to attack.

The armies did not stop once they reached the forest, pursued by some unspeakable horror, they plunged on, stumbling over tree roots and fallen logs, never turning their heads around and never hearing the scream of those falling behind.

Sword belted at the hip, Zuco ran after his fleeing army, his heart beating rapidly against his chest. The memory of that void and the eternal darkness made him sweat. He had never felt so scared in his life. Unable to control his army and unable to bring the words of command to his lips, he was hardly aware of the other generals who had also failed in catching the attention of their men. All Zuco could think of was his utter failure in being a commander. He should have controlled the numbing sensation that crept through his brain, the half paralysed mind, the… whatever evil that escaped from the void if only for a few minutes to seep his will out like a pool being drained dry.
