  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi there!

Just been shopping (guess where!) and looking at alot of the stuff we've bought Tesco Value (loo roll, pasta, crisps, biscuits, tortilla chips) and they cost half the price! And in all fairness to me and the husband they do the same job.

What do you reckon though is the difference between Tesco Value and Tesco's own? Is it the quality? Or is it the name? Or is it the origin? To be fair, if it was horrifically bad they wouldnt really sell it would they?

Nice to chat to y'all

You can't really go wrong with bog roll (even value stuff) but I'd steer clear of value meats, which are laden with salt and all the nasty stuff that is left over such as gristle, skin, bone etc. Cheap chocolate and biscuits tend to have a lot of hydrogenated vegetable oil in them as a cheap substitute, but I don't think that they would do much harm unless you consumed a lot of it (but eating a lot of expensive biscuits too would be bad for you!)

Tesco value food (not the meat though!) should be ok as long as your diet is well balanced - but remember the additives! And this is coming from somebody with probably the unhealthiest diet on this forum.

Tesco value have a box of chocolates out and they're only 99p or something and they're very very good for that price. I was really surprised.

Bit of retail knowledge here. Take Digestive biscuits as an example. Supermarkets take a contract with a firm who will produce the 'value' biscuits on their behalf. They also have a contract in which the same firm will produce their 'own make' biscuits. More often than not, these are the same firms who produce McVities or Burton's biscuits.

We have a biscuit factory near us owned by Burton's. They produce Wagon Wheels, Jammy Dodgers, Toffee Pops and stuff. They also produce Royal Edinburgh Shortbread which retails are about £5 a box. They also make Tesco's own make shortbread and biscuits and value biccies, which are the same as the Royal Edinburgh stuff, only with less fancy packaging. They also make safeway/morrison's. And also Asda.

In reality the stuff you are spending 50p on is basically the same stuff you'd be spending £2.99 on normally. They're made in the same place. Differences are with toilet roll the tesco value stuff is probably produced in the Andrex factory, and does not differ that much.

All you're paying for with branded goods is the packaging and maybe a slight difference in quality of the thing you're buying but it depends what it is. With biscuits, it's virtually the same stuff.

I've been in retail too long. I don't even work for Tesco.

hmm...

Dont like either.

I think they are actually the same - my sister worked for tescos and one day looked at some of the ingrediants they were the same just in different packaging.

i find taste is rather lacking in tescos own (either one) products.

That maybe the case for tesco own brand vs. proper label, but tesco value?

Same goes for a lot of the value stuff. Value chocolates are smashing for 99p. I was amazed at how good the quality was...expecially the nougat ones...yum!

Ever since I was little, I've always looked for the bargain!!

And I've discovered that Asda is the cheapest! Tesco is next though!!

There isnt a lot of difference between basic goods and Asda/Tesco own. A lot of it just has different packaging, except the meat, with that I'm wary. Always think it's the same stuff they put in animal food! Or the stuff they send to mcdonalds, which is apparently a grade lower than animal food!!

I remember as a student noticing that the Tesco Value Baked beans were about 50% runny tomato sauce and 25% beans and 25% fresh air. I decided that although they were half the price, they were also half the amount.

Heh heh, but was the air fresh after you ate the beans?? ^_^

Sorry..... :sorry:

Where's the 'hangs head in shame' smiley?

As for toilet roll, ours comes from Costco, the quality is fine, the price cheaper per roll that Tesco, the only disadvantage is finding somewhere to store 60 rolls of toilet tissue:)

As for meat, you can't go wrong with Waitrose, their sausages are fantastic:thumbsup:

We usually avoid the Tesco Value range for all except sandwich bags.

Still haven't sunk as low as Lidl and Aldi yet:sorry:
