I personally feel Murder is because we kill things everyday without even thinking twice about it. We kill animals. We kill plants. We kill bugs. We kill bacteria.

If the command was meant to mean we should not kill anything then we would all be dead. Life feeds from life. Something has to die for our lives to continue.

Actually, the "better translation" was done by our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ--"LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND and LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."(Matthew 22:37-39) This translation removes all ambiguity as to the true meaning and intent of the Commandments. As our LORD stated, "ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS HANG ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS."(Matthew 22:40)

Actually a direct translation says " One true to yehowa does not kill " in another chapter in the book of "seconding(deuteronomy) it explains that commandment, including exceptions, the laws of killing in self defense etc etc...

In Matthew 5:starting at 21 Jesus speaks of this OT law and uses the word o0a'yw (is the closest my key board will allow) which can be translated to to slay by violence, to slaughter, butcher; used of slaying by cutting the throat.

To kill would be the end result, so the translations that use "kill" are not wrong, but there is an aspect to the person being killed, not properly conveyed by simply stating the end result, but it is a more traditionally correct English translation.. For whatever that's worth.

I guess that is why in Mt. 5 Jesus goes on to say not only is it wrong to "Murder" in this fashion, but even if you were to harbor the Feelings that would have you "Slaughter or butcher" someone, that it is the same to the Lord if you had gone through the act. Meaning you are guilty of that sin.

Where Jesus extends the law to include your feelings or thoughts, (Like in Mt.5) Is not intended to set up a legalistic, abide by a strict set of guide lines, or you lose your salvation economy.. What he is doing is setting up the need in everyones mind for a savior. Effectively Jesus is making it impossible to live righteously enough to earn your way to heaven by your good deeds or lack of bad ones. This is the bigger issue. That even if you can live your entire life, without physically killing someone it doesn't mean you couldn't be found Guilty of this sin...

Exodus 20:13 is referring to murder, for God elsewhere commanded
the Israelites to kill their enemies (1 Samuel 15:2-3). But that was
under the Old Covenant of Moses, when believers could hate and
kill their enemies (Matthew 5:43). Now, under the New Covenant of
Jesus, Christians cannot hate or kill their enemies, but must love
their enemies (Matthew 5:44) and not employ any violence against
them, even in self-defense (Matthew 5:39, Matthew 26:52,
2 Corinthians 10:3, Ephesians 6:12, 1 Peter 2:21-23).

Neither is perfect.

The trouble with "you shall not kill" you've noted adequately (though it's fixed up by ammending it to "you shall not kill other people".

The trouble with "you shall not murder" is that is a truism: murder means killing people when you shouldn't, so it reduces to "you should not kill people you should not kill".

Obviously, "murder"... pretty simple stuff, we deal with this everyday. But, the Law is spiritual and one should not assume to try and be saved by claiming to obey it. Only by the Spirit of God living in one's heart may one be saved. Man is utterly corrupt without it -- all men, but through Jesus Christ who is the Son of God and who alone has come from Heaven.

Therefore, even if one hates, one is a murderer and stands condemned.

Translation is a difficult task. As pointed out, the root meaning of the word means to dash to pieces, and so simply refers to an action that would terminate life. However, the context is rules governing person to person behavior, and thus the idea seems to be do not kill a person, rather than an onion. I prefer a literal translation (i.e kill) but with footnotes suggesting the idea is murder, because of the other verses that suggest lethal action can be taken under cover of the law (does not carry the sword for nothing).
