If the term "nation" is meant to apply to the government itself, rather than the people who make it up, then it is completely false to say that America was a religgious nation at its founding. No religious authority was invoked in its creation, and hence, the claim is patently false. It is only by reference to the religious sentiments of various founders that the notion of America as a religious nation even gets off the ground, and in that use of the term, it is definitely a demographic characteristic that is at stake.
