There you were,
Lounging in that convertible,
Hair in curlers,
Eating nonpareils from a bag---
Just killing time.

I didn't know that it was a dream,
So I didn't ask you anything.
When I woke up, I thought,
"Can we try this again?"

I have so many questions.

I saw you looking,
Thought to offer a nonpareil,
But could not turn to face you
In my curler'd head.

Perhaps we'll meet again
Next time in a dream
Of my own making.
..You bring the snacks.

Ah, but time flies
And dreams die.
The shining moment is gone,
Never to be summoned again,
However much how we long
For it; no matter how we try,
Our efforts go awry.

I would bring any desired gift,
But I cannot find my way to you.
