When I was in college, I avoided temptation by doing two things:

1. I considered my studies to be my full-time, primary job. I stuck to my books, and if I had any time left over for anything else, fine. If I didn't, too bad. I figured it was only four years, big deal if I didn't have a social life.

2. I avoided membership in fraternities and various other campus organizations the exact same way I would avoid exposure to an extremely dangerous and contagious disease.

Simple. I graduated with a 3.8 overall GPA (4.0 in my major), and a handful of letters of recommedation and repeated notices of my name being on the Dean's List.

But then, I was there to get an education---not party, see new sights, find a girlfriend, make a ton of friends, etc.

The best thing I had to do to avoid temptation was...

1) Live at home. I didn't have the whole dorm life experience, so wasn't really tempted by a roommate or floor members to go to parties, bars, etc.

2) Work at night. Can't really do much to get in trouble if you have a nighttime job on campus. ;)

3) Constant prayer and devotion to God. I didn't have much of that my first couple of years in college, but the last 2 I did. :)

The "typical" college temptations aren't really a problem for me. I've never WANTED to drink, or do drugs, or have tons of boyfriends, or any of that stuff. So...I don't have to worry about avoiding that stuff, because I just don't want to do any of it! :)

Hang out with my christian buddies(most of the time:D)

I never much got the desire to much to party, drink, smoke etc.

Before i was the instigator, when you grow older it all seems meaningless anyway so it stopped and died a natural death(praise the Lord)

Wolseley, you're my inspiration! I was just talking this issue about girls in my polytechnic and decided it was not worth the time to chase skirts. You said what I wanted man. :)

This thread is full of good advice. Thanks! I'm in first year and I've found it really hard so far to try and live a Christian life here at school (you don't know hard it is to admit this). I'm living in dorms so it's definately full of temptations. So far to deal I've gone home most weekends and that seems to help.
Thanks again

There are lots of teptations at my college. it is know as the party college around here. So it has been hard to avoid them, and I have done alright for the most part the only thing that I don't get around is drinking, I'm not saying that I drink everynight or anything like that. But I have been known to put back a few.

We must stand firm with Christ... this means that we must be willing to do His work regardless of the consequences. Remember we are not going to be able to do this on our own... but it is through Christ that we will be strong.

Do not be afraid to associate yourselves with non-Christians... (even the really rogue guys)... we have to be with them, and show them Christ through our actions for them to see His power. We are the aroma of Christ to those that will be saved. However, do not let yourself become guided by principals of acceptance... do what is right, and they will see the glory of God.

Remember .... we only have one chance at today... after it is over... it is over. Believe the Lord, and do not be waivered by the claims of men. If you cannot look back on your day and know that you have acted out God's commands... then it was a waste. Anyone can sing the songs... or participate in these forums... but it is the true servant of the Lord that will endure the flames of life with a continual desire to obey God.

stand in this field, this arena of blood, and of sweat, and of tears where the servants of the Lord have been at war. Stand here... and feel the breath of God as wind on your face. Know that you have fought for the voice that tells you He is God, and apart from Him there is no other

Remember paulewog... that many people accused Christ about whom he stayed around. However, He did not care. It is the sick who need the doctor. Love the Lord so that when around evil... you will be victorious, and that everyone will see the glory of God. Do not fall into the temptation of exceptance... but stand on firm ground knowing that the wind and the waves are no match.

Lets pretend that a drunk 21 year old was in my room last night looking for answers. Pretend that he said he did not believe in God, but that I (through Christ) was giving Him second thoughts: (actually... it would be the Spirit of God doing this through our actions which are the aroma of Christ). What if he went away last night hearing about the Living God wanting in earnest for man... for man's love. Furthermore... what if he heard about the Living God becoming like a man to become our sin. What if what if what if... however, these things will not happen if you alienate yourself from the drunkards, and those who are shunned by society. Follow Christ's example... and remember that He will not lead you astray.

take care

PAULEWOG!!! (lol)...... no need to 'argue' about the point... but what you said pertaining to Christ should pertain to us as well. Any accusations against us should obviously be false.

Christ, my Lord and my God, did not 'hang out' as the term is used today. However, He did spend alot of time with 'outcasts' ... alot of time indeed. Remember... we have been called to take the gospel to all men. I do not recommend this to everyone. We should only act under the Spirit's guidance. As said earlier: never fall to the temptation of 'compromise' or 'acceptance' when around anyone. As long as you stand firm with Christ... they will all see your good works and glorify our Father in heaven.

take care all
