Starlin and her band walked up to Chad and Kirsten. "wow, you guys are third? sorry about the bad draw." Taylor, one of the guitarists said.
Andrew, the lead singer of their band nodded. "we're near last, but I'm not sure if that's any better."
Starlin shook her head and smiled to the new comer. "oh, sorry we didn't mean to interrupt, we just came to wish you guys luck."

"No problem," said Chad.

"Shouldn't be," said Mark, "I don't think that girl on stage could possibly be any more off-key. If you're any better, then I guess you two are in good luck. Nothing like a great performance after a terrible one."

"She's finished," said Chad. He turned to Kirsten. "You ready?"

"Good luck," said Mark as Chad walked on stage.

The piano played a small introduction, then Chad began. He sang,

Take me, make me
All you want me to be.
't's all I'm askin'. All I'm askin'.

Not a bad start. A bit more piano, then he sang the first verse,

Welcome to this heart of mine.
Buried under prideful vines
Grown to hide the mess I've made inside of me Come,
decorate Lord,
and open up the creakin' door an'
walk upon the dusty floor.
Scrape away the guilty stains
until no sins or shame remain
Spread Your love upon the walls
and occupy the empty halls
until the man I am has faded.
No more doors are barricaded

The first verse moved immediately into the chorus.

Come inside this heart of mine
It's not my own
Make it hooome
Come and take this heart and make it
All Your own
Welcoooome home.

Chad smiled. He had done rather well so far. His voice hadn't faltered once, yet.

Take a seat, pull up a chair
forgive me for the disrepair, and the
souvenirs from floor to ceilin'
gathered on my search for meaning,
and every closet filled with clutter
messes yet to be discovered. I'm
overwhelmed. I understand:
I can't make this place all that You can.

Come inside this heart of mine
It's not my own
Make it hooome
Come and take this heart and make it
All Your own
Welcoooome...

I took this space that You placed in me
Redecorated in shades of greed.
and I made sure every door stayed locked
Every window blocked
And still you knocked...

The music quieted down for a moment. He sang softly,

Come inside this
heart of mine. It's
not my own.

The music built itself up again.

Come inside this heart of mine
It's not my own
Make it hooome
Come and take this heart and make it
All Your own
Welcoooome,
Welcoooome,
Welcoooooooooooom Home.

The music played softly in conclusion.

Take me, make me
All you want me to be.
That's all I'm askin'
All I'm askin'

Chad knew he and Kirsten had done well, because they were applauded, as much so as when Mark had performed. He walked off stage--back-stage would be a more apt term--and met up with Starlin, and Mark, who was still standing there.

Kirsten, ignoring them, went to put the music in her bag. She thaugh she did pretty well, considering that she'd had less than 36 hours to practice. Over her shoulder, she said "I'll be in the crowd, cheering you on, Starlin, so, good luck."

Kirsten nodded in recognition, and left to find a seat with their group. The only seat available, though, was with Jeff, the youth leader. She shrugged. A seat was better than none. She sat down and began watching the other performances.

Jeff greeted Kirsten as she came over and sat next to him. "Hey, great job! Wasn't that a last minute thing?"

************

"I'm gonna go sit with my youth group," said Mark to Chad and Starlin, "See you guys later!" With that, he left.

"Bye," said Chad. He turned to Starlin. "I guess I'll be going too. Good luck!" He returned to where Kirsten and Jeff sat, but seeing that there were no open seats in that area, he had to sit a few rows behind them.

Starlin waited backstage, she enjoyed the other music immensity, but as their time grew closer she got more and more nervous. this was a new song, and they hadn't practiced nearly enough, but this was the song she knew she should play.

Please don't let me mess this up Starlin prayed quietly as the people before her band finished.

With a deep breath and a smile she and her band walked on stage. "hey everyone, how are you all doing today!" Andrew called into the mike. the crowed yelled back. "Good, this is a song called Trail of Tears. I hope you enjoy."

Andrew stepped back and Starlin started to play on the piano, it was an eerie like sound going up and down the scale. but soon Andrew broke in with his guitar and Starlin was right behind on her bass. Eric the drummer started a beat with a smile, he was also the backup singer.

This the trail, of a thousand of tears that I have cried.
Cause I have failed, at every attempt that I have tried
To get out, of this box I’m living inside
Waves of doubt, rush in just like the oceans tide
(echo)The oceans tide
I know it’s time
(echo)I know it’s time
To grab a hold, of one last breath, before I go under,
I’m sinking deeper inside myself, beneath these uncried tears

I let it out, I let it go, dropping all I have to follow
I lift my eyes, to the skies, and for the first time in my life
I see hope, I see truth, forgiven this and healing wounds
I step in faith, and will not wait, for tomorrow is to late

Andrew stepped back from the mike for his guitar solo, Starlin grinned as she watched him. he had come a long way. Soon Andrew stepped back.

This is the trail, of the blood my savior has bleed,
I hold the nail, I pierced your hands, now mine are red
As I fall down, I see I cut you deeper my King
Now all around, guilt creeps in, to sweep me off my feet

And all I need
To grab a hold, of one last breath, before I go under,
I’m sinking deeper inside myself, beneath these uncried tears
I let it out, I let it go, dropping all I have to follow
I lift my eyes, to the skies, and for the first time in my life
I see hope, I see truth, forgiven this and healing wounds
I step in faith, and will not wait, for tomorrow is to late

For the next part Eric starting singing "I let it out", again while Andrew sang "I can jump.."

I can jump, in the river of fear or of love | I let it out, I let it go, dropping all I have to follow
And I will jump in the sea of guilt or of blood | I lift my eyes, to the skies, and for the first time in my life

And can kneel in, the guilt of hope or of fear | I see hope, I see truth, forgiven this and healing wounds

And I will follow, my savior or my tranquility | I step in faith, and will not wait, for tomorrow is to late

(scream) Trail of tears

I let it out, I let it go, dropping all I have to follow
I lift my eyes, to the skies, and for the first time in my life
I see hope, I see truth, forgiven this and healing wounds
I step in faith, and will not wait, for tomorrow is to late

Starlin grinned as the crowd applauded, she breathed a quiet prayer as she and her band left the stage. it had gone very well.

Kirsten clapped loudly, liking the song. She could tell that Starlin and her band had worked really hard. After the next few, and last bunch, bands were finished, it was finally time to see who had won. She got up and went back stage to wait with Chad for the results.

((Sorry for being gone so long. When I returned from vacation, I was too tired (and lazy) to check CF much at all, though I'm not exactly any less busy than I was during vacation -- which wasn't what a person would call "relaxing." Anyway, I'm back, and too lazy to think through this next post, so it probably won't be very good...or long. Oh well.))

Chad wasn't at all surprised when Starlin's band was deemed the winner -- they definitely deserved it. The cheers they received certainly weren't quiet. They would be asked to perform on stage for the final night at CIY, as was asked of the winners every year.

"Congratulations," he said, smiling, amid the cheers.

After Riding Shot Gun was named the winner, Kirsten got up from her seat to go looking for Starlin and the band. When she spotted her, she rushed up to her and the band and said, enthusiastically "When we get back to the hotel, it's party time! We'll be up till two, rocking and dancing the night away! WHOOOHOOO!" Then she ran off to purchase proper party items. Kirsten really hadn't expected to win, because they only had practiced one day, prior to their song, and Starlin's band had had the whole year to practice their song. Kirsten was just releived that one of their group had won. She baught streamers, and party cazoos. Luckily someone had brought their stereo and that the hotel had a disco room.

((Twelve, if you would approve Sapphirleoht's character, I would like her to DJ.))
