  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The only place where "Leave it to Beaver" families existed was on 1950's TV.
Some Christian homes still operation on the Biblical principals that existed in the 1950's. Mine included.

I don't think what one watches on TV is an indication of what they want out of society.
Not what we want. What we have.

I certainly don't want a Godless society.
Society in general does, if it did not, we would not be trending towards a Godless society.

So if you don't like something on TV, instead of saying that because you don't want to watch it nobody should watch it, one should just exercise personal responsibility and just not watch it.
It is not a matter of telling someone they should not watch it, it is a matter to telling them why they should not watch it.

*EDIT* to add the word Biblical

Yes, sadly there are many christians who still have the racist and sexist attitudes that were a hallmark of the 1950's - and earlier. It's quite sad for the church isn't it?

Jerusha girl - there are men who also have boobs - personally I find the sight of them more offensive to mine eye then Janet Jacksons.

$Votes, the majority of people get what they watch most. TV, movies and music tends to be down to personal taste.. I don't watch much mainstream TV and prefer to have a faster internet connection with a larger download limit.

I do not believe in censorship (either then when taking away illegal content, such as pedophillia vidoes). There are pleanty of good shows and movies legally avaliable on the net. Take the time to work out what you like and agree with most, whether it is Miyazaki films or the chaser's war on everything, why be dependant on corporations to give you entertainment?

Athene, good point that some self proclaimed Christian’s did/do not live according to Biblical principals. I have clarified my point in the previous post.

I believe the comment was talking about family structure, not racist attitudes. Now, sexist is relative, in a way. Some think that if a man likes that his wife stays home with the kids, he's sexist. I don't think anybody's really advocating that position, but it does exist. I stay at home with my children. If I wanted to go to work, my husband would support that. But I want to be available to my children, God has given us the ability to live on my husband's salary, and my husband supports that choice, too.

Some would call us a family similar to "Leave it to Beaver" in that way. Does that make our life choices any less valid? I believe not.

Okay -

I'm glad I set off a firestorm here. For those of you who were incredibly sarcastic and nasty to my post....I'll just agree to disagree with you and leave you to your insignificant life (or no life at all, rather) of posting and trying to appear cool on the internet.

By the way, I thought that this was supposed to be a "Christian" site....so all of you out there trying to "hate" on Christianity...you'll have your day.

To those who truely offered discussion and advice thank you! I took one posters advice and looked into Comcast DVR, Dish Network and Tivo KidZone. So now, I can have an option other than throwing the tv. away, all of you worried about my so-called support of censorship can relax now (sarcasm)

Seriously, I just wanted to vent...so everybody calm down!

You don't like sarcasm but you are quite willing to be condesending and insulting.

Having an opinion on the rights or wrongs of censorship is not 'hating on Christianity'
Other than your self described 'venting' you haven't realy supported any of your OP.

I particularly liked the way you said you weren't advocating censorship whilst doing so :)

I'd like to be helpful so maybe you'd like this

To me it looks boring but i guess I'm not the choice demographic.

Talking of choice just the one news channel.
that'll be fair and balanced.

If you wish only to vent to Christian people who will agree with you, I suggest you not make posts in the section for all members, in the discussion and debate section, and then attack those who disagree with you with personal comments on their life and passive-agressive threats by proxy.

The more I mature in God even now 20 years, the more I realize that (typical) television usually is used for very very evil things, yet it's seldom talked about or taken seriously as such among believers...that is scary...and it's outright commonplace across the world.

I've spent a few years without a tv completely, and I did not miss a thing really. I do own one now, but usually just for DVD /VCR use, for the most part.

Yoho:

Nice thread Necromacy. :prayer:

Also thank you for your evidence free opinion. It has added a lot to the thread.

It is a strange thing to brag how little you watch TV.

Your argument was more persuasive for being in bold.

getting back to the original topic of this thread, yes i agree with you.
i dont understand the stuff they allow to be on the air today.

I dont mind what they put on the air, cable or satillite, I wish they would develop a better method to more easily block undesired programming.

I rarely watch television, and if I do it is only movie channels without commercials....I loathe commercials

I agree that the channels are there for us, but 'us' isn't the same as 'me'. I would never expect EVERY CHANNEL to cater to my personal standards. If I don't like something I don't watch.....I don't make a mission out of killing off sponsorships or trying to impose my will on the general population via boycotts. That kind of thing always strikes me as very self-obsessed.
I hope it's okay to join in here. I actually find it to be quite the opposite, not self obsessed, rather selfless, as I imagine Robinsegg is thinking of those around her. I know when I see something on tv that is inappropriate, I always think of kids whose parents maybe do not care as much as other parents about them and therefore don't monitor what they watch. Some of the shows, even advertisements on tv these days border on pornography, and low level course language is becoming socially acceptable. The music videos that they show early on a Saturday morning are soft porn, both the lyrics and the film clips. I think of the kids and I fight for them. I have two nieces, five and seven and even though my brother and sister-in-law are fantastic parents, sometimes the kids get up early and switch on the tv while Mum and Dad are still sleeping. Although I live in Australia, we have similar issues here. I think the minute that we stop fighting for appropriate television will be the day that porn, course language, violence etc will take over commercial tv.

I'll just utilize the "Ignore" feature in my control panel. I can't stomach anymore morally reprehensible garbage I read from some people at this site.

Dude, you've just invented the process of taking reasonable measures to protect one's self from personally objectionable material! Good on ya! Now, if only we could get regular people to do the same...
I am pretty sure HisEagle was referring to the members on the site openly advocating soft porn, course language, violence and generally inappropriate programming .... I don't believe they were referring to the profound 'changing the channel' statements. The point is that television stations should start showing some sense and maturity in what they air.

i have watched the show several times, and the lessons taught on the show are far from being moral!!!

just take a step back , and read what you wrote.. "theres a lot of gratutous sex/ violence refrences"

why tv would air such crap as this???
i know , i know - entertainment.
I agree with you! When I accidentally stumbled upon 'southpark' one evening, my jaw was dropped to the ground most of the time. I did see the episode out and there was nothing moral or redeeming about it. That show and others like it are the reason people begin threads such as these :)

Agreed. I also think that comparisons with the Bible are valid. Afterall, both the Bible and the South Park are just different forms of media.
Ouch ... can't say I agree with the bible being a form of media statement ... you certainly go for the jugular ... speaking only for myself, the bible is my way of life, not a form of media. Perhaps you could be a little more respectful when referring to our spiritual sword. This is a christian website afterall ... open to all members or not?

The Bible itself is a book. Your faith may indeed greatly impact your way of life, but I doubt that the book - the medium used to transmit information to you - is what you worship.

I doubt any offense was meant :)
