Teething

How long does it take for teeth to cut once teething starts? Christian has started teething and is incredibly cranky. SHe started about 2 months ago and hasn't had any teeth show up yet, but I know that she is in pain. We have some baby orajel and that seems to be ok for a little bit, but then she is fussy all over again. She also doesn't want to 'eat' she is almost 3 months old. Yesterday it was like pulling teeth to get her to eat an ounce, she normally doesn't refuse a bottle.

Any help would be great.

It just varies from baby to baby. One thing that helped was soaking a portion of a washcloth in water and freezing it. My daughter loved to chew on it.

Avoid the Hylands teething tablets though. I learned the hard way with my son that they are not safe.

Other than that, not much we can do. I think teething is one of the primary reasons we cannot remember being an infant or toddler...too traumatic

For DS about 4 months, then they popped in regularly.

For DD she teethed for 6 months then had 4 in front she was working on (you could finally see them) for about 2 more months. She just started chewing everything I should see a tooth in another month or 3.

The pain gets easier, frequent exposure . If the bottle truly bothers her, make sure it is teeth, and then try dripping it so she doesn't have to suck. (if you have ever had a tooth infection you know sucking is TERRIBLE!) But don't force it, it is 'darkest before the dawn' so as soon as the tooth pops she will be willing to drink again, but don't make a big deal out of it, or the habit of you 'pulling teeth' (a rather ironic phrase .) will remain.

Each child is different. My daughter teeth from 3 months and didn't not get her first tooth till she was 8 months. My son teeth from 3 months and he got his first tooth at 6 months. My daughter had it worse when she teethed but orajel usually worked for her and teething rings, teething biscuits and stuff like that is what I used.

Goodness! I think you changed your name but I can't remember what it was. Why confuse people like me? My son still has no teeth and he is 9 months old! There were times we thought he was teething but apparently not! It could be anything. I am CONVINCED he is teething now though .... but I have been wrong before.

I know teething can take months and there are lots of teeth. Hehe.

Andie didn't cut her first tooth until she was almost 10 months old...but she worked on them weeks before hand. Her major symptom was diarrhea (sorry if TMI! lol)

But I DID use the teething tablets with her (I don't think the name is what was posted earlier, though). These are all natural teething tablets & I swear by them...they worked wonders! Also baby Tylenol helps, too.

Wow, I've never heard of a baby cutting teeth that early. It might be harder on your little one because she's so young. When they're a bit older I think the teeth come through faster--about a week at at a time with my own daughters--because they're always chewing on things, but at 3 months I'm guessing there's not much she can do. Are you sure it's her gums that are causing her pain? You might want to take her to a pediatrician either way.

Both my kiddos cut their first teeth between 3 and 4 months. The nice thing was that they were both done teething before other kiddos their same age that we knew.

With the teething tablets, I've learned to tred lightly here after my experience. I've found some moms are very 'protective' of their reputation My son was an infant when a mom I knew who swore by them recommended them. They worked but my son also fell forward and hurt his head pretty badly. The pediatrician we saw told us that she never recommends these "natural" tablets because what they do basically is drug up the kid (make them drunk). Of course, the little ones are too little to tell us but my son's pupils were uneven when examined and the doctor said she was pretty sure he was experiencing dizzyness. I called a pharmacist after the appointment and he read to me the warnings and said he really cautions against them as well. You have to remember, your baby is much, much smaller and even if the caffeine and belladonna (poisonous at larger amounts and adversely affects the brain) are in small amounts, it takes much less of them to affect a baby. Of course, these tablets are not regulated and have never been tested. Hylands has put on a wonderful marketing campaign especially online (they really downplay the risks and play up its 'safety' but it's never been TESTED!) and as a result they are very popular with mothers. I was told my a nurse that it's actually the sugar (lactose) in the tablets that soothes the gums and simply putting sugar on the gums would have the same effect. It's the other ingredients that make the child loopy and out of it.

I just think if you're the type of mom who would give dramamine or some other drug to your small child when travelling, you probably won't have a problem with this (my mother used to do that to us) but if you don't like drugging your child, hang in there and avoid them. Your baby is not going to remember teething...I guarantee it.

Pain wise, your kid will get used to the pain, the drugs are temporary, and man does the pain hit hard when the drugs wear off! Ever had a tooth infection? trust me when the drugs wear off its like a train blasted your skull, but then you can't get anythign done without them, fortunatly kids don't have to get anything done.

My father swore by some opium, (since outlawed) my ILs swore by some oragel, I personally swear by cold strong teethers, and lots of attention (mainly so I can see the new teeth .)

My son's tooth just poked out so he was teething for sure this time! Its barely out though and I can feel both bottom ones. He keeps sticking out his tongue, I think because he can feel the tooth and maybe it feels good. I know when my gum is sore I automatically rub my tongue on it. Its so cute though because he looks like he's sticking his tongue out at me. Also he keeps biting me.

yeah tooth!, not so good on the bite. I usually put my kids down for 30 seconds when they bit, seemed to cure them quick (specially if they were in the middle of a meal!)

BTW that tooth I wasn't expecting for a month Its here .

My son got his first tooth at 8.5 months. I think he was teething for months before they popped through. He is a yr old and has 4 teeth now. It seems the worst of the teetthing would last about 2 weeks for each tooth. (problems sleeping, being cranky) i use orajel and teething rings.
