Ted Turner apologized profusely yesterday for calling CNN staffers who
wore ashes on their foreheads for Ash Wednesday "Jesus freaks" -
saying his insulting remark was "thoughtless." But the nation's largest
Catholic civil-rights group questioned Turner's sincerity and demanded a
face-to-face meeting with the CNN honcho "to find out what's bugging
him."
Turner made the remark at a staff meeting preceding a party for retiring
anchor Bernard Shaw. Of the 300 people present, three or four had
ashes on their foreheads to mark the start of Lent. Sources said Turner
stared at one and said, "At first I thought you were in the earthquake" in
Seattle that day. "But I realized you're just Jesus freaks..."
