  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think I read somewhere you have some expertise in geology. I don't know much about plate tectonics, but I understand geologists consider they are responsible for the things you say.

Sure, we live in a world that has many hostile environments. If I live in the South Pole and dress like we do in Australia during a blizzard we will die. You could hardly blame God for that.

Sorry, I overlooked your post. Scripture doesn't suggest that all natural disasters are the result of God's judgement, but God certainly used them in OT times to punish nations including Israel. Remember the story of the ten plagues of Egypt. They got the complete treatment - frogs, grasshoppers, hail, disease etc. You'd have to question the intelligence of a leader who kept defying God in the face of such an onslaught. He gave in when the fisrtborn child of every family of Egypt was killed by an angel of God.

That story alone demonstrates that God used natural disasters to punish civilisations. Then there was Noah and the flood.

Some might argue that God has changed His way of operating in these times. Maybe.

Scripture is careful to point out that not all calamities and hardship is GOd punishing people. Have you ever read the book of Job in the Bible.

I think you are trying to prove a point over something that Scripture doesn't teach.

Sulphur,
The logic doesn't follow. Proving disasters on another planet do not come from God doesn't mean God doesn't use disasters to punish civilisations. Also, saying God does has used natural disasters to punish civilisations doesn't imply all natural disasters are God's anger.

Also, it does not apply that they are more guilty than the rest of us. Jesus clearly teaches that all will perish if they do not repent.

Luke 13:4-5  Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? [5] I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."

I am an atheist/agnostic. I don't believe in the flood or the ten plagues, those are just old myths. I was arguing from a logical/scientific viewpoint.

As if the Bible is not logical. Often the scientific viewpoint is not logical. It is obsurd to come here and say that your only going to accept "scientific evidence". We are not scientists, we are theologians. If you do not want to have a dialog between science and theology why would you come to a christian forum?

You are the visiting team, this is not your playing field. I do respect your coming here though. I sure would not want to go to a secular fourm and discuss these issues. At least not right now. Also I respect that non christians are even interested in the christian perspective on various issues that effect us today.

This must be why christains are so seldom harmed by natural disasters. I know for example that no "true" christian churches have been harmed by tornadoes in the USA. I would only go to a chrurch that has been natural disaster free for a long period of time and if one was to hit it I would leave immediately to find another more godly institution.

I beleive it was Mark Twain(or Robert G. Ingersoll) who responded to a plea for money by a church to rebuild after a tornado, "If god wants you to have a church, ask him to blow it back"

If sometimes God uses natural disaster to punish people, and sometimes they just occur because there are hostile environments on the Earth, how do you tell the difference between natural disasters meant to punish people and natural disasters that just occur naturally?
