Tattoos

I got a question for everyone. What do you think of tattoos? I didn't think it was appropriate to get them, but I know that is Old Testament way of thinking. My friend just got one and I haven't heard of anybody at church objecting. I was thinking of getting a few, but I want to make sure it's not going against anything biblically. Thanks!

I dont think there is anything wrong with getting a tattoo. I think some of them look pretty cool, but not for me. There are some cross tattoos out there that are breath-taking.

Tattoos didn't make the forbidden list in Acts 15:28-29, so I'd say they're fine.

Now I won't get one myself, because I don't need one, especially since everyone and their brother is getting one. It's tragically ironic that a whole bunch of people who think they're being rebellious are really just getting them to be more popular.

I have a tattoo and I love it. It's deeply meaningful for me in my spiritual walk. I would not personally get a tattoo that did not honor God or point to Him directly. I have been planning my second tattoo for over two years now and it is still only conceptualized and being molded. I don't think it is a light decision or one to be made out of vanity.

My Gram showed me some scripture when she found out I'm getting tattooed saying you aren't supposed to cut or tattoo yourself but I think some of them are beautifull. So Idunno..
I've been planning my tattoo for about a year now but I've heard muscle growth makes them get deformified and gross.

Personally I have nothing against tattoos. I probably will never get one because I can't handle pain well and I hear it can be pretty painful for some people. rofl. As long as the tattoos aren't of demonic-looking beings and they aren't of Satanic symbols or other such things then I think getting a tattoo is just fine. lol. And some of them can actually be very glorifying to God!

I LOVE my tattoos AND my piercings. I used to work as a body piercer a few years ago, and I recall doing modifications on many known Christians. I think the whole "tattoo" thing is just a way many people choose to express themselves. As an artist, I find that tattoos can be an excessory to the skin that can make a statement about that person.

I'm a new Christian, about 6 months in, and right after my commitment to Christ I got tattoos on the backs of my calves, of old school anchors, with one banner that says 'family' and one banner that says 'God'.

I'm constantly stopped and asked about my tattoos by Christians and others alike. Its a way I can proudly wear my love of my faith. I would post pics...but I dont have 100 posts yet. So here is a link where you can see them:

Actually, incest is included with the prohibition on sexual immorality, which is a categorical term in this verse.

I was kind of wondering the same thing earlier this week, although I have no intention of getting a tattoo...

but I came across a website stating: "Although 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 does not directly apply to tattoos or body piercings, it does give us a principle, "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's." This great truth should have a real bearing on what we do and where we go with our bodies. If our bodies belong to God, we should make sure we have His clear "permission" before we "mark it up" with tattoos or body piercings."

So, I suppose you should just pray about it first and ensure that it's ok in God's eyes (?)

That is so open to interpretation. Our body is a temple, and our body is a gift from God. What you may consider 'marking it up' is what I may consider to be using it to glorify God.

My tattoos are a conversation starter. I'm repeatedly asked what they mean, and it's a GREAT opportunity for me to share the good news with people.

Is it any different than the hairstyles we choose, the clothes we wear, or girls having piercings in their ears? I recall many places in the bible that describe Christian women with nose rings of gold or silver.

I agree, its a personal decesion. And you have to listen to GOD's answer to you.

Very good of you to notice... it surprises a lot of messianics too.

G-d may correct me in the future (I've got to be open to that after all), but since I'm not taking part in pagan death rituals or honoring idols and the dead... I don't know if that one Scripture applies to that in which I partake. But I have a minority opinion in the movement

btw, (not that it matters to the tat talk) I looked up fornication/porneia ,which is the word used in that verse we're talking about, and you're right, incest does fall under the broad definition in the Greek. Good call on that one. Perhaps I should have said eating your children or some other wonderfully vivid one

actually, how tattoos look when you're older is completely dependant on how you take care of them, where you get them, what kind of ink is used, and how deep the needle work is.

Older tattoos, like the ones you see on people 40 and older, are mostly made with india ink, which has the tendency to bleed and fade alot more than the ink mixtures used nowadays.

If body modification is something anyone is interested in, Christian or not, it pays to do a little research so you know what you're getting into.

Actually I am not sure. I used to want to get a tattoo, then a couple of months ago God convicted me otherwise. I know it seems to only talk about tattoos in the O.T but in the N.T it talks about our bodies being temples of God, and to me a tattoo is a way of defiling that temple.

HOWEVER, that is only my personal opinion. For me, tattoos are not the right choice. But my dad and brother both have awesome tattoos of a celtic cross and to me that doesn't seem to be a way of defiling the temple God gave us, but of worshipping Him.

I think my biggest problem is (at the risk of sounding very sexist) on girls they usually can look pretty trashy IMO. I have seen some women with very tasteful tattoos, but as a whole I think its harder for a woman to have a tasteful tattoo.

I have actually debated this issue with people on both sides.

The passage in Leviticus is for the nation of Israel. Leviticus 19:27 to be exact. However, the beginning of 19 says to the nation of Isreal, not the Believers in Christ. It was a law set up to seperate the Hebrews from the non-circumcized tribes in the area.

As to that Corinthian Passage, it was addressing the sexual sins and of Corinth and that the Body was not an object of pleasure but an object of Worship. To imply he was addressing tattoos is more than a stretch.

However, if it is your personal conviction that you do not try to force on others than do whatever.

I have read that entire passage and do realize that it is referring to mainly sexual sin, and yes admittedly it is a bit of a stretch to apply that to tattoos as well. But I believe that that verse can be applied to many areas of our lives.

Our bodies are a temple and we are supposed to take care of them. Through that verse I was convicted that for me a tattoo would be wrong, it was also because the only places I would want a tattoo would have negative connotations in the world, and I did not want to be representing myself that way.

I am not saying that it is always wrong to get a tattoo some people do it for awesome reasons. But for me, personally, yes it would be a sin.
