  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So, after the big stir with the birth control thread, I figure I would move on to something less serious.

What is your opinion on tattoos?

(I'm wondering because I got my first one today and wanted to know what ya'll thought of tattoos before I posted a picture of it. )

I don't think there is anything wrong biblically or any other way with tattoos. It is a cultural thing. Nothing wrong.
I think it all depends though on what the tattoo is. Nothing gross or evil or anything.

And on another point
I think it is dumb when people get their significant other's name tattooed on them.

Well that depends on whether its tasteful or what your motive is for getting one...

[bible]Leviticus 19:26-28[/bible]

as long as you're not getting the tattoo for occultic purposes I really have no doctrinal issues with it

/me waits to see the picture

I don't think mine is distasteful. And my motive for getting it is personal. It's the words, "just breathe" on my wrists. It's two words that are personal to me. It's not really for anyone else to understand or really see... so that's why I got it done in white ink! But since it's brand new and really visible, I've decided to show a picture of it here just to see what ya'll think. (It's not letting me post the picture so here's the links.)

I have another appointment to get this done next week. It's the word "Passion" in Aramaic and I'm getting it done on the top of my foot.

I would have to also ask what your motive is for getting them? Keep in mind that any visible tatoos can bar you from getting a job in some fields. Most people I know of got a tatoo for a number of reasons:

1. Their friends were all doing it.
2. Rebellion against their parents/society.
3. The need for attention.
4. To personally advertize a characteristic or personage that they themselves were unable to project.

I don't hold anything against someone with tatoos it's just that I have never felt even the remote need for one in any regard. But keep in mind that there is a difference between a tatoo on a young, toned body and the same tatoo on old weathering, sagging flesh which will eventually be the case sooner or later.

DeliberateTourist makes a very good point above.

To add another angle to this discussion, I'll assume that everyone here believes that they were individually created uniquely from God. Now, since God created each of us to be our own, unique and special in our own right, none other like us on the planet, it's safe to assume that God was careful in creating each one of us. He was also purposeful in where he place every detail. Your hair color, your eye color, the way the bridge of your nose wrinkles just a bit when you laugh, that freckle behind your knee, etc.

God is proud of each and every one of his creations because they came from Him. Now, are you so brash and self absorbed that you think YOU can do better than GOD? "Hmm....I like my body and all, Lord, but it would look much better with some CUSTOMIZING!" I just think that it is a brash point of view to have.

I'll step out of his argument now as the last tatoo argument I had, no one understood my point and I spent 3 pages trying to explain it (I don't care if you disagree, at least take the time to understand my point first though).

Speaking personally; I'd consider a tattoo the same way I'd consider any sentimental thing - a way to remember something, or to remind myself of something. Occultic practices are still blended into the art of tattooing, but not nearly so much anymore because of the dumbed down nature of modern art. :p It's only applicable if you chose to persue occultic symbolism in the tattoo design, which most people don't do anymore, unless they're just enthralled with the bizarre symmetrical designs. It's usually not a good idea to get a tatoo unless you've designed it yourself and know what it's meant to commemorate. That way, the symbolism is totally defined by you.

But I'd not consider it a bad thing, so long as it's not for ridiculous motives. Those things are hard to get rid of once you have them. ;)

I am not a fan of tattoos, thus I would never get one for myself, but I don't have any problem with other people having them.

To be honest, I doubt I would date someone who had tattoos (mainly because my Dad would probably freak out).

I don't mind them unless a person covers themselves with them...I think that looks gross. I don't know what the obsession is these days with them, especially with all of the tv shows about them and stuff (Inked, etc...). I almost got one when I was in Alaska a few years ago but I figured I had better things to spend what was left of my money on. lol

I think they are personal and one needs to think about whether they will want a particular image on their body 30 or more years from now.

As a side note, not really relevant but....I think tat's on one's face is the dumbest trend. ugh!!!

You're right. And that's why I really thought about things before getting it. I wanted to get my first tattoo when I was 18 and now that I'm almost 22, I decided on something that I really wanted. Not all my friends are doing it, infact only 1 friend I know has tattoos. I'm not doing it out of rebellion. I don't live with my parents and I already discussed it with my mom and she's ok with it. It's not feeding a need for attention, because I got it done in white ink, so when it heals it will be hardly visible. And visible mainly to me. And I do understand you point about the age thing. That's why I'm only getting them done on areas that are not known to eventually sag... my wrists and top of my foot.

And you're right about the profession thing. Thankfully I am in a profession where that is not a problem. It's funny because I set up the appointment to get the tat, then I go to work the next day and I end up working with this lady that has a bunch of tattoos (covered up though) and it turns out she is the mother of the person I'm getting the tattoos from. Breezy is the name of the artist. She's a Christian and goes to my brother's old church. Anyway, I'm glad I work in a place where it is not an issue.

tatoos are ok, als long as you don't get addicted and as long as the tatoos don't mean anything occult or similar.

I don't think there is anything wrong with them, but I do think they are unbelievably dumb. I see no good motivation to get one. I think people get them out of insecurity and to fit in. They try to get them to be unique and yet they aren't anymore because, heh, seems like everyone has one. Lame imo.
