  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Well I have 4 small tatoos on my body that i got over a period of about 15 years. My sister has 1 tatoo and has never gotten another(that was 10 years ago), so it doesn't necessarily become an obsession. Every person is different.

I have a small cross tattoed on the back of my neck. I know that i won't be condemed for this. I love God w/all my heart. This is just one of the ways i show my love for and belief in Christ. Some people are just very judgemental.

A defilement of the flesh? I think there are far worse things done that most people accept.

Wow do I agree with that. For example, obesity. Sometimes a person's ability to function as a faithful disciple of Christ is 'hindered' if they are obese (due to poor health) (I can say this because I once was 70 lbs overweight). At least with tattooes you can still "Go out and make disciples". My tattoo helps me tell people about Christ. It glorifies God. Being overweight and indulging in food (or other things) is just as much of a 'defilement of the flesh' and can hinder ministry. If the Lord were to get upset about someone getting a tattoo, I believe he'd be MORE upset if they weren't fulfilling their call on their life and that's living for Him and spreading His Gospel.

It is your body and if you want a tattoo then get a tattoo. I have them and find it very funny that other people even care that I have tattoos and that they judge me because of them. If we are going to truly be Christians then how can we justify judging someone based on the fact that they have tattoos.

Here's a thought, think of something else to celebrate your 18th with and save that for your 21st.

You're just a Baby!

Yeah, I know I'm young and when I think about it I'm getting married to the darn thing so I'm not gettin it that soon. I change the design every week for what I want, so I'm really going to wait 'til I'm 100% sure.

I have to say that for me getting a tattoo (I have a chi-rho on my inner left wrist) was a wise decision.

I've seen designs of the chi-rho on the internet, what does it mean??

I don't think that anyone who doesn't drain the blood from their meat can really complain about Old Testament laws. I'd get it, although your heart seems a really odd place for a cross it'd be kind of asymmetrical so I doubt it would look very even, although if that's the effect your going after. I have recently got a St. Micheal Tat, and I think it's probably one of the better things I could spend my money on, and the pain is very little compared to the coolness of that tattoo itself.

I'm sorry but I disagree with that I feel you need to follow some of the things in the Old Testament otherwise God wouldn't have us read it. And I know it will be asymmetrical, the only way it wouldn't be is if I got it in the middle of my body. If I got it on my arm it'd be the same way. And if I like the tattoo and want another I might get one on the other side of my chest of a verse, but who knows that will be even further down the road of life.

I know a few people said something about it looking cool, I don't care what other people think about it, I want it to mean a lot to me and that would one reason I'm getting it.

I finally went through with my tattoo in December and about 10 minutes ago I remembered that I posted this asking people's thoughts on this website well to clarify something......

Mezza, playing Devil's advocate, but what would God smile upon more: painting your body (which is neutral) or donating blood, which you don't have the chance to do if you get a tattoo (which is good)?

If you got extra money to burn, wouldn't it be better for the world to give it so that the less fortunate can have better lives?

I gave blood in January or February (A month or two after getting my tattoo) and gave again last week. As long as the Tattoo is done by a real artist and not done in some dude's basement the red cross is A-OK with it all.

It's also been used twice as an Evangelist tool.

God Bless,
Dave

Daave220:

If you're learning about the Christian faith, I would advise you to read both parts of the Scarlet Thread by W.A.Criswell. It demonstrates very clearly how the Old Testament is essential to understanding the New Testament.

You can find it at www dot wacriswell dot com. (Sorry, I can't post links yet.)

Also, here are two words that are vital to Bible Study: Hermeneutics and Exegesis. At first learning those two skills may seem intimidating, however I can assure you they are within reach of almost anyone who wants to learn them.

Exegesis is very relevant to this discussion. As many in this thread have hinted at, the passage in the Bible that references Tattoos is not forbidding you from getting a tattoo. That is solid exegesis-- as believers we are no longer all of the laws in Leviticus.

Having said that, I'd also caution you against going overboard and getting many tattoos or the wrong kind of tattoo as it may hinder your witness a bit. Paul made reference to the fact that we are not under many of the laws in Leviticus several times, but he also cautioned believers not to use that freedom to cause someone else to stumble. i would encourage you to look at those passages.

VB

DOH! Didn't look at the date of the thread... MAN I hate when I post to outdated threads... Apologies to All. Can I delete this?

I've been wanting this tattoo for literally 7 years now. A friend of mine who is an amateur artist drew a rougher version of this out and 3 of us were supposed to get it. 7 years later only one took the plunge (and he says he never regretted it for a moment).

Well, I finally joined him. I found one of the best tattoo artists in Houston here, had him touch up the design, clean it up somewhat, and here is the finished product (just finished having it done 3 hours ago). It's the crown of thorns done tribal style, with the 3 nails from the cross going through it.

This thread is very interesting. I was curious to see what others thought about body modification.
Personally, I agree with body modification, as long as it's not done for foolish reasons.
I have my lobes, eyebrow and labret pierced, and they all have a very symbolic meaning behind them. We are still loved even if we have piercings or tattoos:)

There's a passage (I never remember where in the OT) about a woman who is "very beautiful" and she has a nose ring.

Also I heard someone say (maybe on this thread I don't remember) that "your body is a temple" and this was in a joking way I'm sure but how often do temples have no designs or paintings or any of that stuff. I think that was a bit of sarcasm because if you were to take that seriously we'd all need tattoos.

I wouldn't worry about what Leviticus says*, enjoy your tattoo.

*(Most Christians pick and choose what they follow from it anyway.

Some even go so far as to construct theological cop-outs called "dispensations" to explain why they pick and choose.)

i Personally have 2 tattoos i dont regret getting them but i probably wont get anymore. however in regards to old traditions from the old testiment, Jesus died to free us from the bondage of sin which includes sin caused by rules in the OT.
