Tagalog?

I've been trying to learn tagalog through Rosetta stone, but it doesn't explain grammar too well. Any tagalog speakers who I can pick their brain on? There aren't exactly a lot of filipino hotspots around NE ohio for me to ask questions so I'm resorting to the internet.

If you have a Tagalog Bible, try reading the first 18 verses of John's Gospel over and over. The language of those verses is simple and you may be able to absorb the grammar more easily.

I did download a tagalog bible for my phone app bible, but like an idiot I tried to start reading at Genesis 1:1.. and I didn't get any farther than Genesis 1:1. I will try your advice. thanks.

"so panu, tuturuan b Kita o ano???" <-- go figure that line. haha... its actually my 2nd language coz I didnt exactly spend my whole life in d phil...so if u throw words at me like "panahon" or "disgrasya" I cud still help... drop me a line

Why Do I want to learn? I'd like to do some mission works there and not be at the mercy of a translator that's why.

So far I've deduced siya means like his.. or her.. and sila means their.. but siya confuses me.. it can mean her and his? It doesn't seem like tagalog has words that designate sex, unless you account for lalaki, or babae... or lola or lolo. I'm still on lesson two here so the basic grammar is a mystery to me sometimes. I've still have figured out the differences between walang and hindi or mo and ako.

And po.. I'm still trying to figure that out I first thought it meant "please" but it seems to have more meaning than that and pushes some sort of politeness in tagalog. oo seems to be "yes".. but opo.. "yes please"?

whoa lots of questions there. so nice of u to pick my country for u mission. id b happy to help u... its hard to txt on the phone though.. frst of all po is a sign of RESPECT.. we say it towards older pipol... siya cn apply to both girl and boy... example siya ay maganda means she is beautiul... siya ay gwapo means he is handsome

mo means you
ex: "walang katulad mo" means no one like u...

and it helps to watch tagalog movies with subtitling... though I cant recommend any as I dont rili watch .... I learned a little bit of indonesian that way as a kid-- indo lang is quute the same as ous.. oh and I learned to speak tagalig thru teleseryes (soap operas) when we first moved to the philippines

Well actually I have been using google translate a lot along with my rosetta stone. It just seems that, just like english, tagalog words have multiple context to them depending on placement.


Whats with "ng"? A couple of phrases have it separate and some add it to a suffix. I can only guess it turns the word into a adjective. What drives me nuts with rosetta stone is that it doesn't explain context and just expects me to figure it out between the words and the, sometimes vague, pictures asociated with the phrases.

I am well aware of maganda. My ex-fiance would only have me call her two two things. that or her name. lol

Whats more frustrating with rosetta stone is my apparent "thick american accent". The words that seem to be shared with english get kicked back more than the tagalog. I get more wrong buzzes from zero and brown than I do tumatakbo and for the life of me I cannot pronounce "ikinagagalak" without sound like I have a speech impediment.

"ng" is a preposition -according to dad.. ng literally means "of".. I forogt about tagalog grammar... we learned that around elementary... pandiwa (verb I think)... panghalip (pronoun).. hehe.. sori I thought u were just interested with learning short phrases and stuff...
didn't know u were serious to learn about d grammar 2...
so ur ex-fiance (err-current wife or ex-ex gf??)... shes from the philippines then?? so uve been to d phil... where exactly?

ikinagaglak ha? I dont even remember using that EVER... but i think its "Im proud to..."???

its one of the deep tagalog words I found hard to learn (seriously my friends and i dont even use bente which is the number 20)

im used to talking in taglish(tagalog english) its easier...

and about not being able to pronounce stuff.. looks like ur getting tongue tied (nabubulol) ... watch a movie/teleserye...i mean even if rosetta stone offers d prnounciation of d words (im assuming it does) its still nice to hear it applied in real life suituations.. its more... natural..

like eavesdropping on a conversation, u pick stuff up and its sticks...

It is a part of the greeting exchange exercise in the program.

"ikinagaglak kong makilala ka" is the entire phrase.

The I bounce some of the words off my spanish speaking friends because a lot look and are spanish in origin. When it was teaching me color names I found it bizarre that some tagalog words and some were just straight english.

berde,azul, dilaw, puti, pula, brown?????? Of all the colors I expected there be a word for brown. What the heck did you refer to the color of the ground for thousands of years? I find some words funy.. I call them "tagalogized english' I don't know if you guys literally spell some words different or if the lessons use the different spellings to emphasize the accent more. Bayolet? violet. telebisyon? televsion. radryo? radio?? why? The linguistics of the language I find a bit interesting. It shows me the influences of other cultures have had on the country.

Manila,Bohol, and um.. Davao. I can't name the town in Bohol.. the biggest one. The one that begins with a T and its name is half a dictionary long.

I enjoyed Bohol the most and Davao the second. I did not care for Manila because it felt like it was hotter 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the country. But I got a feeling I need to suck it up because I am thinking my mission works will most likely be in there.

I think I am jumping ahead too far ahead with the grammar sometimes, but I wish to communicate better.

I think I will look online for some tagalog movies with english subtitles tonight.

nyahaha... its fine- I stuggle around the site toi... ugh.. colors... I cudnt wrap my head around that til I got to hi skul cos we had to do literary pieces by d national hero- heck I dont even remmbr d title it was so long ago. all I can say is "nosebleed" which is a common pinoy expression wen we try our best to speak in a language were not gud at...

yeah most modern pinoy words are in the form of taglish - english formed into tagalig words .. its bec most pinoys find it easier....
I mean in manila and baguio (where I come from) its a city so the language is more relaxed... and we have a different dialect called "ilocano" (which I understood from listening to my cousins but I was never able to speak- told u stuff sticks wen u eavesdrop)

ok moving on... if u went to provinces say bicol or ifugao or to visayas where the accent is thick (listen to boxer manny pacman pacquiao- i cant understan bisyas sumtym) now that's where ul b needin a lot of old tagalog tongue twisters...
