  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am back not only to the forums (lol) but also to the market of upgrading home computers and I have sort of a hangup that maybe you all can give me a little help on.

With all the new Windows 8 talk going around which is the same interface as my Xbox 360 interface (which I happen to like) which should I buy...the newer Tablet PC combo or stick with a Laptop?

I like the ability to take the tablet where ever but you can do that with a smaller laptop as well. Just want some input.

If you like smartphones and touchscreen tablets then you will like Win 8. If on the other hand you use your PC professionally then stay clear of Win 8. Win 8 looks like it was designed by FISHER PRICE and is destined for Facebook, Twitter, multimedia users!

Tablets and laptops are vastly different and your choice should be solely dependent on your needs for computing.

If you need higher specs to run larger programs with higher requirements (I.E. you want to play games such as Skyrim or you're using graphical programs like Photoshop), then a laptop will be what you're looking for.

If you're looking for something to carry with you that is lightweight and won't be doing much other than browsing the internet, checking email, reading a book or using office programs, then a tablet might work.

Keep in mind that with a tablet, you will also have much less storage space. Generally tablets only have between 32-64gb of storage on them. They also have smaller processing speeds than laptops have as well as less ram so things will generally run slower.

There is also the limited amount of programs out there for tablets. If you're use to using a wide arrange of programs on your computer, you may not be able to find them on a tablet or you may be forced to see what other comparable programs are out there. Programs designed for tablet are lighter weight to make up for the lack of processing power a laptop provides.

If on the other hand you use your PC professionally then stay clear of Win 8. Win 8 looks like it was designed by FISHER PRICE and is destined for Facebook, Twitter, multimedia users!
Yay, another person who has NEVER EVEN TOUCHED Windows 8 and has 0 knowledge of it other than the Metro Interface.

FYI and for future knowledge, Metro is only the starting screen which can be easily avoided and is built specifically for apps that are designed using the Metro code. You can very easily get to the Win32 which is exactly the same as previous Windows systems.

The more you know... *

First of all I have tried win 8. It's Metro UI is a big distraction especially when switching between applications. I hated win 7 for 2 reasons: lousy start menu (now I am using Classic shell) and the worst "Search" But with Win 8? Well let us see how well it will fare with the PC crowd. It may be popular with tablets and smartphones but Professional PC users will hate it. Win 8 will be another Win ME (total failure).

I own a 7 inch ZTE tablet mainly for mobile broadband internet such as game forums, Gmail, online banking, the weather/temperature, product price comparisons like cheapest 60 inch 3D TVs, WIKIPEDIA, Rotten Tomatoes for movie review/ratings. I use the tip of the ballpoint pen instead of my finger for typing accuracy. Start-up takes less than 10 seconds. My monthly usage is under 1GB per month with 2-year subscription with my Australian internet provider at $9.95 for 1 GB per month + ($5.00 per month for tablet). Subscription started just last month .;'*';.

I know what a Laptop is, but what is this thing called a PC Tablet?

You know tablets such as iPad, GalaxyTab, XOOM, et cetera? Those are tablets, PC Tablets are a hybrid of those and notebook computers making them portable while at the same time and functional laptop.
