symbols for having children

I used to have a step-son and I never got to meet Chis who would have been my step-daughter.....do I have the right to identify having a son and a daughter even though they are both dead?

I don't know your religion, but as a Christian, I believe that our children--step children included--are alive and are still ours. I still tell people I have 3 children even though my firstborn passed away a year ago at 23 and my second daughter was born still. My son is still with us. In Christ we have eternal life and, with that in mind, I feel we can say they are still alive and are still part of our existence.
