  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Swedenborgianism?

Hi, everyone!

A few days ago I've found out about a not very popular, but quite interesting, Christian denomination called Swedenborgianism, or the Church of the New Jerusalem. I've found two websites:

www.swedenborg.org

and

www.newchurch.org

From what I've read there, Swedenborgianism seems to be a nice, quite liberal, Christian denomination. The weird thing is that I've also heard opinions that it's a cult! And that made me really confused... So, what are your opinions about it? :)

It seems to me to be far offcourse from mainstream Christianity. Swedenborgian's don't believe that God will judge them:

The final "judgment" is our own realization of our individual essential nature as we face our real selves, rather than an evaluation and dictate by a power beyond.(http://www.swedenborg.org/tenets.cfm)

They don't believe Jesus came to save us from sin:

Nor did Christ come to redeem us from original sin. Rather, His mission was that of revealing the nature and reality of the spiritual life, and to provide a living example of it.(http://www.swedenborg.org/tenets.cfm)

Their beliefs seem off course from what Jesus taught us, I think. On the plus side, love is a key aspect of their religion, so they kept one of the most important aspects of Christianity :)

God Bless!

Below are just a few links to some Christian and independent sites which will supply evidence as to why the 'Church Of The New Jerusalem' or 'Swedenborgianism' is a Christian cult. Of course, it is entirely up to you how you respond to the evidence supplied but you would be wise to take heed.

No. I said it like I said it and "it means exactly what I want it to mean, nothing more, nothing less." ( Humpty Dumpty).

In that case then, as you are clearly living in your own little 'universe', completely detached from reality...I shall leave you to your own devices.

"Cult" is a perjorative term of little value here. Swedenborgians may or may not be "heretics", but I don't think they are members of a cult.

The CARM site is especially entertaining, as it's definition of a cult with respect to vicarious atonement would seem to make our Orthodox brothers and sisters members of a cult.

*sigh*
Theology did not begin and end at the Reformation.

Pick about any sect or denomination, and it has probably has been accused of being a cult by some other sect or denomination.....
