"Swearing"

My husband has a bad habit of swearing and using the "F" word a lot. But I have never once heard him take the Lord's name in vain (like GD or JC - which are really the only words that I find offensive), so I don't really have too much of a problem with it. Although I would like for him to tone it down a little. I also work in a factory environment around mostly men who swear a lot. So I supose I'm just used to it. ;)

As for me, I don't swear - not just because of my religious beliefs - but mainly because of the way I was raised. I was taught that swearing was not "proper language" and you were never to curse at someone. Mom even scolded us for saying that we hated someone. In her mind, hating someone is just as bad as cursing at them. I have been known though to curse under my breath when something bad happens or I get frustrated. I really need to stop that. :o

I try not to swear at all.
Sometimes it might slip like the other week, I hurt myself real bad and I could not believe I actually said the "f" word. I quickly appoligized to God, and the person I was near(since he heard me too) for doing it and hopefully I will never say that again.

I don't swear, but I hear it no matter what I do to keep holy.

For example, I was waiting in a parking lot outside a grocery store today when someone "cruised" the parking lot playing a rap song on his car stereo that sounded like it entirely consisted of F-bombs. The person drove away after a few minutes, but I feel that God will judge me severely for that (I tried putting my fingers in my ears when I realized the driver was not just passing by, but it had no effect)

By the grace of God i endeavour to avoid curse words in my vocab, this is one of the reason I tend to avoid competitive sport. I remember being in a basketball comp some time back and some of the youth I came with trying to hold me down and pray over me...I didn't actually swear/curse, but as they said I might as well have.

I often think, when I am speaking, would I be comfortable using such words if Jesus was here with me.

I often avoid the euphemisms that can be construed as taking god's name in vain as well. "Oh my God" "oh my gosh" "Cor Blimey" "Strewth" "Jesus!", etc. But that's just me and my relationship!!

Funnily enough some Bible's have curse words.

But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own **** with you? 2 Kings 18:27

And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: he left him not one that ****eth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends. I kings 16:11

We use to have a facetious nursery rhyme in school as well, that went.

Bloody is in the Bible
Bloody is in the Book
If you don't believe me
Take a Bloody look

IMHO, I think there is much for the text"Let your speech be seasoned (or flavoured as my mum says) with grace"

I am not sure it is on the web but the Rev John Nevin Andrews once wrote a great paper about cursing and profanity.

Just my thoughts
Dave

Does your God have no empathy?  From what you say, it sounds as if He doesn't care whether you are a sinner, or happen to be in close geographical proximity to a sinner.

No, thank you.

I am exactly the same.

Many people think as they speak.  I think this may also be a factor to cussing.  If we think as we speak (especially concerning cursing) it will roll out like a ball.  This does not give us time to bring the thoughts into submission.  When I decided back in 6th grade to stop cursing (although I have only been doing it for a week any way :sorry:) I first took the strategy of...hey... I"ll just STOP! That worked for a while...then between a number of months and a year I slipped again, so then I started thinking more before I thought.  I realized that (well at least for me) I think what I'm saying as I say it.  So I thought my "speech" before I spoke...which allowed me to even better control the cursing.  Sooner or later...those words don't even come into my mind.  Also another thing I did was make up my own words to express myself but without them having curse word relevance.  (also...some of these are a little comical...or so others think)
such as "Goshdarnit" or "snitz crackers" (but I don't even use those any more...delivered from it :D)

Sooner or later one won't even need their "made up" words of expression, and all thought given to curse words is expelled from the mind.  It took me a while though.

I'll just quote Jesus to respond to your fear:

Mark 7
14 After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:
15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.
16 "If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."
17 When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable.
18 And He said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him,
19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?" (Thus He declared all foods clean.)
20 And He was saying, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.
21 "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,
22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.
23 "All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man."

You did not want to hear the cursing-you hate cursing. It is what's in your heart that matters.

Matthew 5
21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'
22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

27 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';
28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

If you're ever in a grocery store or anywhere with people, there can definitely be a homosexual person nearby (or any person with lustful thoughts in their heart) without you even knowing it; you would not be sinning simply because you are near a sinner (who were the pharisees, sadducees, and other people that Jesus told the Truth to?). If people near you are talking to eachother, they may be telling lies to eachother and you would most likely not know if what they are saying is the truth or lies (sin). And cursing is not worse than lying or homosexuality.

God knows everything, including what is in your heart.
