I was channel surfing the other night and I came across a show about angels on the History channel. When they started talking about documentation of ways, or attempts, to summon angels they mentioned that Solomon had written about this very subject. I forget what text it was suppose to be in. I was disturbed by this information and wanted to ask a few questions.

A couple of questions:

First, has anybody heard of written works by Solomon that has ways to summon angels?

Second, what are your thoughts about Solomon writting about this subject? I am a little disturbed by it. If I knew anybody in my church or any where that said they could summon angels I believe I would run for my life. Was this common practice in old testament times to try to summon angels? I am not a Bible scholar by any means, but I am pretty sure that have never read a story of men, or even prophets for that matter, that summoned an angel to do their bidding. I would like to thank you in advance for your responses.

Im in between a commercial and a show on TLC but the little I've found it comes from a text known as the testament of solomon. The page I found bears this symbol:

So what you want to make of it is up to you.

I'm not sure if itd be a rule violation to post the link, so I think I shall hold off on it.

shows back on

I found a translation of the text and this was the intro to it:

This text is an Old Testament Pseudepigraphic catalog of demons summoned by King Solomon, and how they can be countered by invoking angels and other magical techniques. It is one of the oldest magical texts attributed to King Solomon, dating First to Third Century A.D. Translation is by F. C. Conybeare, Jewish Quarterly Review, October, 1898. Compare with the translation of D. C. Duling in The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, volume 1, Edited by James H. Charlesworth, Doubleday, 1983, p. 935 ff.

Thank you rural preacher and CIS, I agree totally.

CIS, what do you mean by a classic Word of Faith Doctrine? I am not familiar with the term.
I know the question is aimed at CIS, but I'll give a brief answer and I'm sure CIS can fill you in more specifically since he has had a much closer exposure to such things...

Word of Faith is the "name it and claim it" teaching...or as I like to call it "blab it and grab it". Sort of treating God like your own personal genie.

I've always thought much of it sounded a lot like casting spells but trying to do it in Jesus' name. It's mixing occultic ideas into charismatic Christianity.

Well, There are those in the Word of Faith group who believe the following:

1. You can summon angels to do your bidding

2. You can have a Perfected body here on earth. (and live forever)

3. That you can exist in a Sinless perfected Spiritual condition

4. That tithing is some sort of secret "Get-Rich" plan for Christians.

5. That God has the ability through those with enough Faith to perform signs and wonders, such as healing, Raise people from the dead, ect....

None of the above is true.

Spooky bunch of kooks, if you ask me.

Can't find anything in the Bible about summoning angels. I don't think we can order them around, because they outrank us, but I think we can ask God to send angels or extra angels to help fight spiritual battles. Of course, he does what is in his will, but I believe that somehow our prayers give extra power to the angels, although at this point I can't explain how or why.

"Copeland claims that God is a being who stands about 6'2"-6'3", weighing somewhere in the neighborhood of a couple of hundred pounds, and has a hand span of 9" across"

Frightening. The idea that God is just a cosmic human is not uncommon, even among born-again Believers, but it is not scriptural. God is spirit and has no body at all. This person doesn't know God, plain and simple. If his god is 6-2 and 200 pounds, he's praying and serving someone other than our awesome God, who can't be looked upon by man without killing him or her. This guy has the wrong god.

If you read back in 2Kings you will see that Solomon did fall into false worship with one of his wives, which is why he is the last ruler of all Israel. After that time God divided the kingdom. Judah and Israel. In keeping with His promise to David that his seed would sit the throne of Judah, but in punishment for the idolatry of Solomon.

I have no doubt that the Kabalah and it's practises came out of a time of false teachings and idolatry in Israel. Plain and simple, it is witchcraft.
