Summer Reading Schedule for the BoC - Reader's Edition

Thought everyone would like this link. It comes courtesy of Pr. McCain on his Cyberbrethern blog.

It's a PDF file! Starts May 30th and goes through Sept 6th. If anyone was interested in starting a thread discussing the readings of the day, I'd be interested.

But aren't readings from the BoC included in the Treasury of Daily Prayer for each day? Does Pastor McCain's schedule differ from that one?

The reading schedule is quite different than the one in the Treasury.

For one, it's just for the summer.

And it goes through the BOC.

In the Treasury, the daily reading of the BOC is on the same general subject as the scripture readings.

Well, I think the primary itineray in this case is to get more people to read the BOC.

Not everyone uses or owns the Treasury of Daily Prayer.

And different styles of reading aren't exclusive of each other.

It would be like saying if one reads the Lectionary that one shouldn't use a through the Bible in a year reading plan also.

I don't see them as exclusive.

The summer reading plan he posted is really just a bit of a revision of what already existed, and the biggest thing is the page numbers to match the Reader's Edition.

The only thing that occurred to me is it would be kind of nice if some plans were included with the BOC.

]Well they should! Finest piece of workmanship to come out of CPH in quite some time. And now with CPH's summer sale extravaganza going on, people are without excuse. I think I remember reading that in the Bible somewhere.

I don't have my copy handy at the moment, but I thought there was a daily reading plan for the BoC in the Reader's Edition.

I think McCain has too much time on his hands. I figured he'd be busy enough with all the Lutheran Study Bible updates.

From the intro text on the pdf file, it looks like it's an update of a summer reading schedule they've had available for a while, only now it has updated page numbers for the Reader's Edition of the BOC.

I've been noticing that CPH has been asking their customers more for the sorts of things they might be looking for. Perhaps this is one of those items that was in answer to a customer request for more guidance.

One thing I would like to see come out of CPH is more Lutheran works for mobile devices such as: the Palm, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, iPhone, etc. There is a real lack of Lutheran books, if you will available for these devices. It's one of my biggest pet peeves with Olive Tree and Laridian. They both have tons of Reformed works, but very little for the Lutheran reader.

It seems like there are more standard Reformed works than Lutheran works available for free to read on the internet as well. I'm not sure why this is. The prices for many of the electronic editions of CPH titles seem kind of high to me. It seems like they're usually the same price as the printed book and if I'm going to pay the same I'd rather have a real book.

I think one possible reason is that most Christians would identify with the Reformed teaching and that's why those works are so widely available. Everything on CPH seems overpriced to me. I agree with you on the price of an e-book equaling that of a printed book, but sometimes I prefer e-books because they're easier to carry around than a printed book is, and you don't have to worry about the printed book getting marred or damaged if you're reading an e-book.

I would think that Lutherans would try to get as many uncopyrighted books available on the net. I never could figure out why Lutheran theology (Christianity) "costs". The Bible is free. I guess money talks louder.

Maybe if there were more claiming to be Lutheran who actually cared to study doctrine, and bought the books to do so, the prices would go down.

Slightly out of topic:

Porterross, will you order a copy of the new CPH study bible? I do not want to order from CPH on my own because the shipping costs are exorbitantly high. I will also check with Pastor Van. Maybe some other people want to pre-order a copy as well.

Agreed and I have passed on the info to the elders at the church in Fareham who seem interested. If Pr Van will arrange with your congregation to go in with ours for a group order, maybe they'll be kind to us on the dispatch fees. You'll see him before I will, as he's not due back in Fareham until a week from Sunday.

If only a few of us here want to order, apart from a joint, congregational effort, I'll gladly go in with you. I need to order some other pubs from CPH, as well, but have been waiting for obvious reasons.

You're right Rad, it is an issue of money. How much money could they stand to make off of publishing Lutheran works? How big is the market share for such an endeavor? The Reformed market is much much bigger, WoF is much bigger, so their best bet, and I'm talking about publishers like Zondervan and the other biggies, is to sell to your biggest market, which in Christianity, aside from the Catholics, is the Reformed. CCEL has some Lutheran works but not many.

But now that I'm going to be joining the WELS, I don't know how many more purchases I will be making from CPH. But is the WELS publishing house any cheaper than CPH? That's a question for the whole forum, not just Rad.
