For those who are mentally healthy- yes. One can be transformed and made holy because of the crosses they have carried in life. Suffering changes us and teaches us a lot about who we are and what we need to change in our lives to become what Jesus redeemed us to be. We have the choice to accept this or to reject this looking at everything as a unfair curse from God. If you do that- you end up bitter and miserable knocking on despair's door.Jesus'TroublesomeAngel said:So rather than want to be happy, well and Loved we are supposed to delight in suffering-even ask for it?
Those who suffer from mental illness must seek help and healing. Its a different situation. You can however, find peace in the midst of the storm by offering your struggles up to God for poor sinners and as a act of reparation.
Look at it like an alcoholic- we know he can not remain a alcoholic and call this suffering but he can cooperate with Gods grace and do everything in his power to be healed and offer the pains of giving up drinking to God for the conversion of poor sinners. Then we learn the value of our suffering because it is redemptive, it draws down grace.
Same with mental illness- we must seek healing because of the danger mental illness puts us in but the suffering that healing brings can be used for the glory of God.
May I add also that its not like we would ask God to make something bad happen so we can suffer but rather we are prepared to accept what ever God wants to bring us. That is a huge difference than looking for something bad to happen so we can suffer.
