  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Subs or Dubs?

I prefer Subs, I don't really know why though. I've just gotten so used to them now. But I do like watching the dubs of anime because I get to laugh when a characters line shows no emotion to the action that they are showing/doing. Like if they are sinking in quicksand, the character will show the signs of being scared, but instead of the "voice actor" being like 'OH NO!!! IT'S QUICKSAND!!" and making it sound believable, they are all like "oh no. it's quicksand." and it's just so funny when you catch stuff like that.

When I have started watching Anime on DVD's it really confused me- see I was led to believe that the Dub was the same exact words in the Japanese. And when I turned on the subs I was laughing because the words that were being said weren't even realitively close to what was being said. I really get annoyed by subtitles-but yet I watch sub after watching dub once.

Dubs, if done properly, are pretty good

Which is VERY rare. Also the reason I love subs (and I'm also learning Japanese :D but even if I weren't I'd still prefer subs). The one decent dub I've seen is Ranma ½ and I've heard the Cowboy Bebop dubs are pretty good.

I like both. Originally I only watched the Subtitled, because when I was into anime it was a very small market in the USA and dubbing wasn’t done very good. They actually charged extra for the Subtitled VHS tapes, never really understood that. The cost of an average anime VHS was about $40 and that was 60 min of anime if you were lucky. Man, look how far we’ve come!

Now, I try the Dubbed first (Thanks to the DVD choice) if it is good I stay with the Dubbed. Voice actors are getting better for the English. If it is cheesy I go to the Japanese with subtitles. Dubbed is better to me if done well because there is less distraction. But when you get used to it the subtitles aren’t too bad and seem to flow. Sometimes I think back and wonder, did I watch that dubbed or subbed?

Orguss 2 is a really well done dubbed Anime. Kenshin, Ranma 1/2, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star are all good too.

I don’t know Japanese, have enough problems with English! :help:

Kenshin good dubbed?! You gotta be kidding me! They mangle the names so badly it's scary.

I didn’t watch the original in Japanese so I don’t know about that. I’m just referring to the quality of the actors not how close it is to the original. It did get a bit weird when he always said, “That is does”. When he says “Oro” in Japanese. Can’t please everyone…

No, the story's not off (well, it IS off compared to the manga).

But the mangling of the names... it's just not understanding basic Japanese pronunciation. Something that could've been easily taught to the voice actors in like 5 minutes.

Oh, good. You had me worried that one of my favorite all time Animes was wrong in the English. I can forgive the name pronunciations, but see your point. My point however, still is that the acting is good whether they pronounce names correctly or not. They made me laugh and convinced me of their emotions.

You mean the "americanization" of names? They know that they are changing the pernunciation, they are usually trying to do it to make names "easier" to say for North American fans....or at least that is what they say when the fans get up in arms.
