We all know to honour the Sabbath and keep it Holy, but if you guys have an essay or exam coming up, do you study on a Sunday.

My time management isn't the best and I often find myself working on a Sunday to make up for it. Just wondering if you guys have any opinions on the subject.
I really have no choice, I am f/t distance ed student, and I work f/t....weekends are study time.

It's important to note that according to the Bible, the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. We do not rest on the Sabbath to please or appease God. On the contrary, he gives that day to us as a free gift. After four years of college, I realize that there are many Sundays on which you must study. And you ought not to feel guilty about this, because it is no sin.

If I may offer a suggestion, it may be helpful to mentally free yourself on the Lord's Day. If you need or want to study, then by all means do so. But do so with ease rather than pressure. Of course, this is only possible if you work a bit harder on the other six days of the week. Ultimately it is important to fulfill the spirit of the Law rather than the letter.

Thanks, this is really reassuring.

To be fair, I do work hard Mon-Sat; it tends to be my work ethic in overdrive which compels to me try and spend every free moment studying.

I take the point about Sabbath being our free gift (I love that idea!) I think it's important to use a portion of that time to honour the Lord, but I recognise that He gave it to us to ensure we don't work ourselves into the ground and to safeguard our mental and physical well being. I suppose, if studying on a Sunday makes me feel better, then I ought to do it. So long as I strike a balance between study and leisure, or study without pressure.

It's also a matter of (and this applies even if you do think of the Sabbath as other than a gift, and must be spent resting or praising God) keeping in mind that you should always be doing your best as a tribute to God! So, whatever you are studying, do your best as an offering to God, as a form of praise and worship! :)

I think that it is ok to study on Sunday, as long as your not skipping church to do that or anything! For me I go to church then after lunch i usually take a nap or do some homework and then after church and dinner I usually spend the next several hours doing lots of homework!

I just finished a 5 years university degree with good grades... the Lord blessed me... I kept my Sabbath holy by ceasing my ordinary work (which for me was studying). My sister studies Medicine... she is in her 5th year... starting his 6th... she never studied on a Sabbath, she is top of her class.

Im not going to judge what is or not right to do on Sabbath, I understand it is a day to be kept holy, doing good for others and praising God... trying to spend more time with God than usual. I believe it is up to each one. I believe studying wasnt "ceasing my work" during the Sabbath (because I did that all the other days of the week).
I enjoyed my Sabbaths sooo much. I longed for Sabbath to come. Now Im done with my degree... Still love Sabbath, cant wait for Sabbath to come.

I once read an article, in a teen christian devotional magainze, about a college student who kept the Sabbath holy, there was one sunday where he absolutley had to finish an essay.. but he decided he need to keep it holy so this kid waiting until after midnight and stayed up till like 7 the next morning until the paper was finished.

I can say that there have been many times I've done homeowork/studied on the Sabbath, particular right before finals week... It's never really crossed my mind though to keep it holy... I may try it and see what happens this semester.

I work full time and study via correspondence so I have had to study on Sundays but I hardly ever skip church because of studying. The odd occasion may be when I have an exam the next day and I miss one service.

I do the sound and the projections for the church so the services often feel like work anyway :sigh:
Its only on the odd occasion that I go to another church that I actually relax and enjoy the service.

... Why is it that I feel that people believe that keeping a day holy means going to church on that day?

Keeping holy=going to church?

I believe is not that... for example... wednesday nights we have midweek worship... (Bible study and all)... But not because of that it makes it a holy day.

I say this in a respectful kinda way, and actually asking... to see what people believe.

I wrestled with this for a little bit, but came to a conclusion based on Colossians 2:16-17:

"Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ."

I read and believed this, and then felt free to study on Sunday, help people with things around the house as needed, etc. Besides, having a knot in your stomach over a final or a paper that's due Monday that you can't prepare for is hardly honoring the Lord's Day.

i say the point of the matter is the point of the matter. The bible does say that the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. But u said urself u have a problem with constantly studying. I mean, if it seriously affects ur grade that much if u dont lighten ur load a bit (and i dont mean just not studying for a whole class, and studying a lot for another, i mean a little less for each), then maybe u should keep up the studying. But seriously, if u start to notice u are becoming more stressed more easily, and more easily agitated, might be a signal ur body needs more rest, which means u should cut back on ur studying a bit.

Better a one lower letter grade (even if it were a C), than to have a nervous break down and not be able to do any college at all. And for some people, full time college may be too much even if there is a stereotype.

Just watch ur stress barrier. And if ur workin ur butt off all the other six days, i really would probably try to keep the sabbath except for emergencies, u may think that it isnt bothering u now, but then later on it may really start to bother u and then u have to back peddle. The problem might not be u have too much work and so u think u have to use ur sabbath, might just be u have to learn to let go of studying so much, and get it down to a reasonable time to where ur grades are still decent.
