  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

what biblical advice would you give to someone who has a huge student debt?
That still needs to be paid off. Especially if they havent found decent paying work yet.

Psalms 37:21

Romans 13:7-8

Seek, honestly, to pay it off by at the very least keeping to the spirit of the lending agreement.

Mat 6:30-34 KJV
(30) Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
(31) Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(32) (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek ; ) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
(33) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
(34) Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

she needs to seek God as a priority rather than earn a living as a priority or try to find a way to pay off her debts by her own intellect as a priority - God will lead her out, but she must learn how to perceive His leading and follow it.

probably a couple of thousand for a masters degree.
A masters is closer to $30,000 and up.
According to FinAid.org, the average cost of master’s degree for students is between $30,000 and $120,000. The cost varies depending on the university and the master’s program itself.

The cost varies by program as well. The average cost of an MBA, for example, is $40,000. At most universities, this is what master’s degree graduates will pay. Some institutions have programs for less, and MBA programs at Harvard or Stanford could cost in excess of $120,000.

I have done a masters degree myself but it most of it was paid for by my employer, the BA I did was paid for by my parents bless them. i dont have to pay them back.

All the other education I paid for out of my own pocket Ive never taken out a student loan, or it was free.

It seems shes made enquiries atthe monastery and as arule they dont let people with debt in but in her case shes prepared to work and pay off her debt while there as a novice.

Although she did say that her parents suggested she look for secular work first before entering the monastery/convent. (Dont know what to call it, its the carmelite sisters order)

Anyway her parents also have mortgage to pay as well so...

I feel a bit bad that her family finances are in such a hole.
Its a good thing to be financially free and not in bondage or debt to anyone. She couldnt even pay for public transport or a cup of coffee. But God provided today.

Also i suggested we have a carboot sale to raise funds she can sell, her old clothes and books and I can make pikelets, for the project we want to do together, since she doesnt have a paying job anymore and is totally broke.
