I have just read Habakkuk and I'm not really sure how it fits with where I am at. I am trying to think things through more deeply at the moment and so have signed up for a bible study course which I've just started. However, something is occurring to me - which is that my experience in the past is having male parenting that was quite harsh. I am wondering how much my view of God is actually a psychological construct of that harsh male parenting.

My wife also had a very hard time with that because of her relationship with her father. She has told me our marriage has really helped change her understanding of a father but that has taken a while to get there. I have heard many people struggle with God identifying himself with a father for that reason so it makes me wonder why God would choose to relate to us as a father. Perhaps the culture in which the scriptures were written in provides a better answer. Or Perhaps it has to do with the want so many inherently have for a good father.

Reading the Bible can be challenging, and I have found it very possible to misunderstand it if we don't wait on the Spirit for the right interpretation. If I were to read that Habakkuk chapter with filters of harsh fatherhood, my first inclination probably would be to project that onto God. But that is not what it is saying. He's actually using His power there to affirm justice and ultimately to save His people - even though they to some degree brought the coming calamity on themselves. The message is one of mercy with justice.

The two possible pitfalls are to take away the wrong religious message from it and have a distorted view of God, or to walk away from God entirely in frustration. Sometimes we need to wait in faith, and revelation will come that will show us the filters we bring to the Word of God, and how to remove them. Therein lies freedom.

Thanks for posting Paul. I have enrolled on a bible study course to try and clear up my shaky foundation.

However, I would like to ask, how do you know when God is answering prayer as opposed to it being just coincidence?? I would like to be/feel more secure and know when a prayer is likely to be or will be answered. For instance, I prayed for confirmation of a scripture I read but it didn't happen - does this mean that my request was wrong?.

And also I'm likely to have to search for a job very soon, but haven't got much of an idea what to apply for (I'm starting over in my forties) so am not sure how God would speak to me about guidance?

Plus I may have the option of moving area, but I really need help again to know what God is saying, or to know if indeed He will direct me on this?

I find it rather paralysing not knowing how to hear from God on specific decisions and issues. I rarely hear scriptures.

I understand your difficulty as I went through a period of time that I lost faith as well... all I can say is that God is working out all things for the good of those who love Him, who are the called according to His purpose; for whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn of many brethren.

The point is that if you can find it in your heart to love God, who is the ultimate and perfect Father that is nothing at all like the father you have known here on earth, He will work out even your most wrenching struggles for your eternal well being... with the goal of forming the image of Jesus Christ in you.

I will pray for you right now;
Mike

Oh, and for some reason I cannot fathom I feel led to post this as well:

Hab 3:9 NKJV Your bow was made quite ready; Oaths were sworn over Your arrows. Selah. You divided the earth with rivers.

No idea what it's supposed to mean to you, but I was most definitely led to post it by the Holy Spirit.

Thanks for your posts and thank you for praying.

I am not sure what to make of the scripture you have posted. It seems like an indication of vengeance or discipline on people who have been or are God's enemies.

I'm not very encouraged by this incase it is actually meant to indicate my own personal forthcoming discipline by God for falling into unbelief - but I'm thinking that if I am thinking through coming back then would that really happen just at the moment? I appreciate that you gave it because you believe it is is the Holy Spirit's word. I hope that you or someone reading this may be able to shed some further light or bring some wisdom.

It could also mean that God is ready to fight for you against the spiritual enemies that are attacking your soul... IDK for sure, but the context was God promising to fight against those who were oppressing His people Israel (see 3:13).

Not necessarily. Sometimes we have to press through persistently. Some prayers take years - indeed, generations - to be answered because things aren't in place yet.

So we have to go deeper if we're going to reach conclusions we can rely on. I would say first test what you want by the Word. If it violates the written Word it is not of God. Then put it to the test of peace. Can you reach a place of peace on it, in which you can abide and grow in certainty? (James 3.17-18; Mk 11.22-ff) Give it time, with patience but not complacency. All this presupposes a yieldedness to do God's will as He makes that will clear. When we are willing to do His will, He will show us (John 7.17).

God is good and His intention toward you is lovingkindness. So reject anything that speaks of harshness toward you (Heb 11.6). Stand on His word in this regard, and you will wage winning war against the "vain imaginations that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God" (2Cor 10).

Sometimes we need to just put one foot in front of the other. On Paul's second missionary journey he thought he would revisit the churches he planted and encourage them. But soon after, the Holy Spirit would not allow it. That must have been a bit perplexing, but the answer came in a vision: Take a hard left turn and head for Europe. As a result, an entire continent was opened to the Gospel. Paul's original intention was good, but not God's best. But had he just sat around he never would have been available for that blessing. So maybe you should commit this to prayer and then do what you think makes sense, but always remaining open for further instructions. Remember, God's wish is to have abiding communication with you. He will work everything toward that end. So just keep believing and hold on to Him.

I find it rather paralysing not knowing how to hear from God on specific decisions and issues. I rarely hear scriptures.
I know about walking the flatlands. It seems like nothing is changing and a whole lot of time is passing. But the truth is you are making vital headway. You can't climb the mountain until you've crossed the plain. So don't allow yourself to become discouraged. Rebuke it and keep trusting. It will be a protection to you, as you position yourself for the blessing God wants to give you.

It could also mean that God is ready to fight for you against the spiritual enemies that are attacking your soul... IDK for sure, but the context was God promising to fight against those who were oppressing His people Israel (see 3:13).

This is exactly the feeling I got when I originally was led to this passage. It is a picture of God preparing for battle against your spiritual enemies, Koshka, the archetypal things that have kept you enslaved. He is fixing to set you gloriously free. You need not fear Him or the battle. Only love and trust Him and your eyes will see His deliverance.

I've come back .... I tried reading Habbakuk to see if God would speak to me through it but I couldn't really feel a connection. I tried joining the online course that I mentioned and then I bumped into a man who used to go to the same church and he said he no longer believed and reeled off a long list of all the reasons why he believed Christianity didn't work. After that my hint of faith seemed to be quenched.

So then some time passed and a friend bought me a Christian book called He Never Let Go. Whilst reading that, I sensed something happening - only for a moment - like a current of warm air around me which seemed to be imparting honesty and integrity (difficult to explain).

Then today I tried turning to some pages in the bible and I heard a voice say turn to Acts 1 and I read it and I got stuck. I read Acts 1:9 about Jesus ascending to heaven in front of his disciples. I had got as far as being convinced again that Jesus is a definite person, but then when I read that I felt that it sounded so fantastic that I thought that anyone writing the bible could have made it up - especially as it doesn't seem to be written anywhere else.

I had thought that the voice saying read Acts 1 might have been from God, but it also told me to ring a friend when I was trying to think of someone to meet up with today. It turned out the friend was busy and I've had a lousy day by myself, so I think that the voice was more than likely my own mind - but it can't have been God. This does seem to be something that happens to me when I pray - hearing voices.

So I'm kind of back to square one. Well, I think that God exists and I believe that Jesus definitely existed as a person, but I don't seem to be able to get further than that at the moment because of doubts over the bible.

A friend has reminded me that faith comes by hearing the Word of God ... so I'm thinking that may I should try reading again.

Definitely read it! May I suggest starting with John's Gospel? Just read it straight through, don;t even take time to slow down for things you don't understand. be sure to mark with a highlighter or something, any parts that jump out at you as especially helpful. And keep reading straight to the end of the New Testament.

You are right, our relationship with our earthly Father can limit our concept of our Heavenly Father's Love towards us. Reading as I have described is a good first step to clear out that old junk, and make room for the new reality :groupray:

Even as snow falls in winter and leaves in the fall
The holy of holies will always continue to call
Your doubt or your weakness does not delete his love
any more than the clouds in the sky erase the sun above
IF you cannot trust in mortals like me than trust in He
He will not foresake you if you never ever give up
like a feather in the wind He shall lift you up
These words are inspired by love in His kiln are fired
God in His waiting for you and does not grow tired.

Trust me my friend. Do not doubt in him I ask you this. You are not alone in your struggle you are only one of many...so many tested. I will pray for you.

Thanks for your replies - I will start reading John's gospel in a short while ... and take your advice of highlighting or noting anything that's helpful seeking Christ.

I really really want to hear God communicate specifically or personally about my situation - does that ever happen? If so, how does it happen? I'm sorry I realise I might have asked this question before in the thread, but its something that comes up in my mind ever such a lot.

Thank you for the poem dennis1777 - was that something you wrote from before?

No it was spontaneous and was meant specifically for you to ponder. I too struggle so you are of my Christian family. You have your gifts to share invested in you by our lord and I have mine. At times the Words overpower me like like blood rushing to the head when one gets up to quick out of bed. Simply trust in them.

Thank you dennis1777 - i'm glad you shared it :)

Oddly enough I had no choice. It just flowed through me like water through a pipe. Please do not worry. Accept me as a friend so you will have someone else to walk through the trials of this world. Have no fear the Lord will not foresake you as long as you do not give up. Though you may or may not fall try and stay in sanctity but if you do fall return to the Lord again and again. If you do not give up even though you fall he will not give up on you. Fight the good fight.

Koshka,

You seem to be in a powerful spiritual and emotional storm, and the battle is in your mind. You want to be sure, and that is good, and you're looking for truth, and that is good too.

I can relate to the storm situation, because I have been through so many myself. I'm am even in one now, but this time the Lord has been building me up to a different level. This time whenever I doubt or become discouraged, I plant myself firmly and do not allow the enemy an inch of ground. I realize that all the doubts and emotional downs I allow only hurt me, when instead I could be strengthening my faith. In the end, nothing is going to matter except our relationship with the Lord, and that is a function of faith. The world is passing away, and all that is in it. This is becoming increasingly clear to me every day, as even centuries-old institutions are crumbling at a visible pace.

When someone tells me they've given up on Christianity, these days I really can sympathize. Faith is a very precious thing, and I can see how easy it is to lose touch with it, to allow the world's noise and deceptions to trample it down. But the cost of doing so is too great to bear. There's nothing the world has that is worth that in my view.

Beautiful poem, Dennis.

Koshka, the Lord does speak to us with His voice sometimes, but it's probably a better idea to focus on Him the person, because voices can have many origins. Go for the basics. Honor Him and His Word as much as you can, from where you are right now, even with your innate sense of right and wrong. Trust sometimes has to begin in silence, before the voice can be heard. Remember the promise of Rom 8.28, and stand on it. If you turn to the Lord now, when everything seems against it, He will honor that and meet your needs, as when you felt that strengthening wind of the Spirit wash over you.
