  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

While the matrix-like idea of being able to directly link a computer to the central nervous system is one I kind of like, this has got me wondering. Would the ability to link a computer and a human mind be a good thing? In Dr. Delgado's (supposed) research (which I'm going to have to look more into, because it doesn't seem like this kind of experimenting would be legal, much less be so unnoticed as it has gone), the ability to manipulate the reward/punishment part of the brain would be a very effective tool for mind control. Much more effective than a frontal labotomy, because if all it is is really just a brain-implant type thing, you wouldn't notice it, and it would be quite easy for someone to send the right kind of signal (in the article, radio signals are used) to possibly make a person do just about anything.

Before I descend too far into paranoid conspiracy theories, I would like to say that I'm not 100% sure that much of this research/experimentation even exists (search for "stimocievers" or "dr. jose delgado" on a search engine and most of what you will find is conspiracy theories and "what if" rants, like mine), and if it does, the possibility that anyone, short of a totalitarian government, would actually use this to actually control someone's mind. I'm not paranoid enough to believe that our government might use this, of course, but all it would take is a team of skilled neurosurgeons to implant one of these in somebody, anybody, and the subject might not even have memory of it.

go to the vox populi section of deoxy, you will find a number of interesting (if nothing else) posts by a user called theta who believes this might have been done to him, and plans to try and prove it. He doesn't say how, of course, but I assume he'll get some kind of catscan done or something. While he may just be delusional, what bothers me is that the possibility exists at all.

On the other hand, such a chip would likely be pretty expensive to make, and could not be made in large numbers if it was all happening underground. It would also take a pretty skilled neurosurgeon (or a team more likely) to implant it, and I doubt very many would be willing to do that if they knew they were used for mind control. But like I said, all it takes is a few greedy people.

But this is just the ramblings of a paranoid stoner. I don't really know what to think, I'm bouncing back and forth between "it's definitely somehting to worry about" and "it's just a nutty conspiracy theory, for the time being, not something that needs to be worried about, at least not in the near future". I'd be interested to hear what you think about it.
