he did....So bring a Christian sounds like the Amish...close yourself off from the secular world and listen only to Christian music....

John 15:19 - If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

When we accept Christ as Savior we are no longer of this world, we are living in this world but we are not of here. The Amish, I personally think, do take separation from the world a bit too extreme, but they have the right idea. We need to close ourselves off from the things of this world, we cannot love the things of this world or the love of the Father is not in us the Bible says.

That is possible to do, however, without starting entire communities like the Amish.

Again, why is listening to Christian music and leaving secular music such a burden to some people? I mean, if you truly obey the greatest commandment to love the Lord God with all your heart, it should not be burdensome to listen to godly music only. The Bible doesn't say we should listen to and/or encourage ourselves simply with music, even if it is clean secular music. The Bible says we should sing psalms and spiritual songs!

And for anyone that loves the Lord that is so easy! Before I met the Lord I loved many secular artists! Michael Jackson, Rihanna, all kinds. But after converting, I realized that music has no meaning, it doesn't feed my soul or spirit in any way. It feeds the lusts of my flesh. I want to grow in the spirit, and be dead to the flesh like the Bible says!

Any Christian with a desire to listen to secular music needs to pray about this problem.
LOL What rubbish.

Fact: Pretty much every one of those Christian bands you like listen to and are influenced by secular music themselves.

I'm writing this off as a troll thread and moving on because such ignorance either can't certainly can't exist or if it does, I don't want to be associated with those people much like I don't want to be associated with Westboro Baptist just because we happen to believe in the same God.

What about contemporary versions of old hymns? I really like those. Here are some examples:

Some are nice to listen to- but they're not appropriate for liturgy. So- they're essentially secular songs with a religious theme. I understand that you consider them church appropriate and hymns. I don't.

Secular music is simply anything that isn't considered sacred music. It encompasses a very wide variety of music. While some may not be appropriate for a Christian to listen to- a lot of it isn't problematic. Also- what others consider sacred- I don't always agree. What any particular religion besides my own considers sacred is up to them- but sacred to me is a much more narrow category.

I think you are confused here. The songs I posted are modern versions of centuries old traditional hymns. The second one, "all creatures of our God and King", is actually a paraphrase of a song written by St. Francis of Assisi.

I agree that some secular music isn't problematic, I still don't understand how you can think that the traditional hymns that I posted are secular.

I'm not confused- I simply have a completely different perspective on the matter. Compared to what I'm used to these days- those songs are new and aren't church music. I understand that they are church music for you- but when you're used to Byzantine chant- everything else is modern. It isn't sacred music to me. It's simply Christian inspired music that is nice to listen to- but not appropriate for liturgy.

There is some secular music that doesn't have sinful references and the like, but a lot does. So listening to secular music can be sinful if it is too worldly.

^ This. :)

Below are some examples of some mainstream non-Christian music which in my opinion would be okay for a Christian to listen to since they contain nothing that goes against what the Bible says...

This song was recorded by the then-12-year-old (now 13) Jackie Evancho, from an album of her rendition of movie hits. This song is a reflection of pure innocence and sophistication at the same time. Nothing wrong (within certain boundaries, of course) with using the imagination. This song serves to bring back memories of more simpler times.

This song promotes racial harmony:

A positive song about happiness:

Just some silly novelty music:

And, of course, there are instrumentals (music with no lyrics) which allows the listener to simply soak up the artistry of the music alone.

Um, what happened to not judging? You don't know WHAT I listen to at all.

Thanks for the fact, but I knew that already. That's why I don't like Christian bands, and don't listen to them. I prefer actual church music, that is sung in church. Psalms and hymns, spiritual songs, I don't listen to or like any "Christian bands" or "Christian artists", because you made an excellent point. They're just copying the world.

My mother and I actually turned on the tv the other day to a music video, we were laughing at how silly it looked, and lo and behold, when we actually listened to the words it was a "christian" song. I couldn't even tell because there was so much worldliness in the video and the beat and everything.

So maybe you should ask what kind of music I actually hear before saying I like Christian bands, which I find insulting.

Um, what happened to not judging?
How did you miss the irony in telling other people not to judge you when you are judging them?

There isn't anything wrong with this, but that doesn't mean that everyone else should follow your preference.

He was judging by assuming that I listen to a certain type of music.

How am I judging anyone by saying Christians shouldn't listen to secular music?

I'm simply being truthful from the word of God, the Bible says we should always be in correction, rebuking, etc for one another and the church. I admit secular music is not directly addressed in the Bible, but that doesn't mean it is right. If I say something like masturbation, for example, is a sin, am I judging? No, because the Bible says its a sin to lust.

If I had an iPod full of secular music, then was telling people here not to listen to it, then I'd be judging. If I was signaling out a certain genre, then I'd be judging. But I am simply sharing the Bible's view on secular music, which clearly falls into the category of "the things of the world".

Gee, if speaking the Word of God these days is judging, we truly are in the last days. There are things that are right, there are things that are wrong, there are things that are worldly, there are things that are godly, there are things we can and cannot do, followers of Christ need to realize this!

God demands holiness from His people.

Secular music, believe it or not can glorify God. Don't make it black and white. Look up the song

"For The Greater Good of God"
by
"Iron Maiden"

One of the most successful and greatest secular heavy metal bands of all time and they have a message about Jesus dying for the sins of the world.

This is a little off topic but I found a Godly message from the newest Superman movie, "Man of Steel". It's not secular vs Christian.

i'm puzzled by this forum....Christians listening to some of the same music as me??? Or is this a parody website????

It's not a parody. Not all Christians count the number of times "Jesus" is mentioned in a song. Believe it.

Now, I will draw the line at some point, but I listen to a whole lot of stuff that isn't explicitly "Christian." Lots of Christians do.

True Love/David Ruis - YouTube

Jesus I need to know true love
Deeper than the love found on earth
Take me into the King’s chamber
Cause my love to mature

Let me know the kisses of Your mouth
Let me feel Your warm embrace
Let me smell the fragrance of Your touch
Let me see Your lovely face
Take me away with You
Even so, Lord, come
I love You Lord
I love You more than life

My heart, my flesh yearn for You, Lord
To love You is all I can do
You have become my sole passion
Cause my love to be true

Wow. There are churches that actually sing that? As "worship"?
