Stepping on a rusty nail and needing surgery

My nephew step on a rusty nail and had surgery yesterday.Does anyone know why he would need surgery over stepping on the rusty nail?She hasn't said anything about removing a foot or anything.I haven't got to talk to her much since he's been in the hospital.She just email me about it.So I'm just concerned about this and very inpatient about info.Please give me impute about why someone would need surgery for stepping on a rusty nail.Thanks!

Infection or damage would be my guess, but I'm not really qualified to say. I know someone who nearly died last year over a wisdom tooth coming in...

Maybe he got a tendon or something?

I don't know, we're really just guessing. I've done it a few times, it's usually just a case of getting a tetanus booster shot if you're out of date. But if it embedded completely and couldn't be pulled out, or part broke off, or they left it and it got infected those are the reasons I can think of.
