The Stand is my favorite. When I first read it, I was in the military. I called home and mom said everyone was sick with the flu. I freaked out!!

that's so funny!!

The Stand is my favourite too. I've read it easily half a dozen times and still cry every time. I love the line where Tom Cullen finally gets it right and says "M-O-O-N, that spells moon" He's heartbreaking.

I love The Long Walk and have always thought it would make a great movie.
"It" was the first SK book I read and I had to stay up until morning reading because I was too freaked out to go to sleep in the dark!!
I really loved "the Talisman" with Peter Straub as well.
Eyes of the Dragon was a favourite too.

I haven't regularly read any of his recent stuff either, I have felt that it hasn't been his best, but agree with Mylinkay that his body of work is extraordinary on the whole.
He is an American Institution.

I haven't read any of his later stuff---the last one I read was The Tommyknockers.

However, 'Salem's Lot was and remains one of the best books I have ever read, bar none. I've probably read it five times, and will undoubtedly read it again. The only book I can think of which is on a parallel with it is Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House.

I liked most of his early books; couldn't get into The Stand, however.....it just failed to catch my interest. Oddly, Cycle of the Werewolf is one of my faves also---certainly not for the depth of the story, but for the atmosphere it produces---sort of like reading Lovecraft.

Outside of 'Salem's Lot, the one which I found most disturbing was Pet Sematary. I stopped reading that one several times before I finally finished it.

I was really into Stephen King when I was younger. My favorites were:

1) The Shining- the scariest "scary" book ever written, IMO
2) It- very well structured and, once again, very scary!
3) The Dead Zone- what an exciting read

I don't really remember the rest well enough to continue the list, but I do remember I was partial to The Stand, The Dark Tower Series, and I found Bag of Bones to be an exciting departure from the normal King shenanigans.

As for movies based on King’s books, I think David Crohenberg's (sp?) The Dead Zone stands at the top, with Kubrick's The Shining trailing slightly.
