Its the voters. Theyve abandoned proper discrimination in favor of the little packets of flavored excitement they demand from media.

(Its possible I had unrealistically high expectations of the human mind in the first place.)

Biden's term shows why we shouldn't have high expectations of the mind.

Im talking about humans generally, in their prime - as it were.

The evidence so far is they have less capacity for discrimination and self control than we'd like to imagine.

No evidence, just your opinion. From where I stand I see this problem on bothsides.

Correct. No evidence will be provided. This is just my pretty well informed impression.

I dont see the fruits of this on the left as much. Where's their charismatic salesman / image-maker front man or woman?

I should also note, this doesnt mean everyone on the "right" lacks self control and discrimination. I personally know Trump voters who are thoughtful and measured in their media choices and decision making.

Its just that the maga movement generally relies on a lot of weak minded people.

I wouldn't have misunderstood if you had said some voter. I'm used to hearing politicians putting a whole group of people in a box and giving them labels.

This is a little arrogant. I guess I don't have what you got is that what you are saying. Your informed impression is an opinion to me because I don't reside in a political box. You mention that the right has no self-control. So the left has self-control?

Watch: ESPN's Stephen A. Smith Corrects Joy Behar with a Reality Check About Trump's 'Mandate'

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith corrected Joy Behar on her own show as she desperately tried to downplay the electoral victory of President Donald Trump while denying the political realities facing the Democrats.

Smith joined ABC’s “The View” Tuesday as Behar tried to spin the narrative that Trump’s comeback was not actually all that impressive.

“He’s been going around with his cronies, touting his so-called landslide and blowout win, but he won the popular vote by 1.5 percent, one of the smallest ever, and he won the general election by less than 50 percent,” Behar said. “So what kind of mandate is this really?”

But Smith, who made it clear that he is no fan of the commander-in-chief, warned Behar that dismissing Trump’s political ascendance is a fool’s errand for his fellow Democrats. Smith insisted that “It IS a mandate.”

“Let me be very clear, I’m no supporter of Trump, I’m a supporter of truth and the facts,” Smith said. “Here’s the facts: The man won every swing state, he increased the voter turnout in his favor from the standpoint of blacks, Latinos, and young voters.”

Beyond improving his share of those key demographics from 2020, Smith added that “89 percent of the counties shifted to the right.”

“That’s a mandate. We can sit up here and play around if we want to,” he emphasized.

“In 2020 Trump didn’t win the popular vote,” Smith continued. “The Republicans hadn’t won the popular vote, if I remember correctly, since 2004. But they did this year, so 20 years after they last won the popular vote, they won the popular vote, they won the electoral college vote, the man won every swing state, and on top of that, 89 percent of the counties shifted right.”

Smith broke with many of his fellow Democrats as he acknowledged these truths.

“I don’t understand how people can look at that and say, ‘There’s no mandate.’ There’s a mandate!” he added.

Stephen A. Smith Reportedly Agrees to New Nine-Figure Deal With ESPN

Stephen A. Smith—one of the most recognizable figures in sports media—has agreed to a new deal to remain with ESPN for at least the next five years.

According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Smith has agreed to a new lucrative deal with ESPN that will pay him at least $100 million over the next five years.

As part of the 57-year-old's new contract, he'll reportedly be continuing as the face of the popular debate show First Take, while also "scaling back" on some of his appearances on other programs on the network. Per Marchand, that would enable him to talk more about politics, having been floated as a potential presidential candidate in the future.

Smith has been at ESPN since 2003 and has risen to prominence with the network. According to Marchand, Smith's $20 million annual salary is the most ESPN has ever paid to an on-air personality without ties to a licensing deal. He'll receive an annual raise of around $8 million, as he's currently making a reported $12 million per year.

In addition to his work on First Take, Smith has appeared regularly on ESPN's NBA Countdown and made occasional appearances on Monday Night Football's pregame coverage. It's unclear to what degree his appearances on those programs will be reduced as part of his new contract.

Stephen A. Smith ‘leaving all doors open’ for presidential bid

Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith on Monday said he is “leaving all doors open” when it comes to a presidential bid.

“Time to stop messing around. Life is great. Especially at ESPN/Disney. Hate the thought of being a politician. But sick of this mess. So I’m officially leaving all doors open,” Smith said in a post on the social platform X in response to reporting that the sports personality said a bid for the White House is not out of his future.

Smith has a longstanding history of weighing in on politics, but has been particularly critical of the Democratic Party in the wake of President Trump’s success in the 2024 election, pushing for it to refocus on top issues for voters in last year’s election cycle including immigration and inflation.

In early March, Smith gave his seal of approval to talk that he could move from sports to politics during an appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.”

“Folks are nuts, number one,” Smith said to comedian Jimmy Fallon at the time when asked what he thought about recent headlines calling him a possible future presidential candidate. “Number two, the Democrat Party, they lost. They had a bad few months. We all know this. And even though there’s a lot of qualified Democrats all over the country from a local perspective — governors, mayors, stuff like that — there’s no real national voice.

“Enter moi,” Smith said. “They’ve come to me.”

It's funny that a guy firmly ensconced in television and sports is calling politics a cesspool.

Perhaps he can form a coalition with Tommy and we can just forget about governance and just talk football.

Good question. I'd be interested to know, too.
He doesn't make it clear at all, who 'they' is.
I'm not on Twitter, but I am on Reddit and Facebook a fair bit and I have yet to come across a single person, of any political stripe, boosting him as a candidate. I'm not sure I've even seen him mentioned in a non-sports context anywhere outside CF.
