• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

i suffer from ocd anziety depression ect ...but when the thoughts come sometimes i find myself hitting my self on the head it sounds silly and i dont know why i do it i guess it s just reactionary to the thoughts . but it concerns me because can hit with force ..and i dont want to end up in the ER because of this ..

i know allot of self injury is cutting and while i have had thoughts of that its only the hitting so far .

I am so sorry, keryakos. When I was a child I used to bang my head, who knows why, maybe it was stress relief--a very poor choice. Of course the problem is brain injury, and as you said, you could end up in the ER.

Would it be possible for you to find something that does not injure yourself when you are stressed? Crunches until you can't do anymore? Chin ups? Find a physical activity to do instead. Stair climbing? Push ups? The idea is to divert the stress into something physical that is actually good for you.

I am praying for you. (((hug)))

I am a former cutter and I feel your pain. Sometimes I would wonder why I even felt better doing it. My best advice to you would be, if you can't refrain from self-injury to wear a rubber band on your wrist and snap it against your wrist. While this does not give long term repair it will be a less harmful way of releasing the same chemicals into your brain that hitting yourself does.
Also, talk to someone who is trained to help with this!!! It is the best way to get better and not feel the urges. Do your best to stay with faithful to your therapy regimen and medication regimen if you have either these will not solve your problems but they will help you. If the urges persist try to distract yourself in the moment, make a list of ten things you will do when you get the urge before you hit yourself. Chances are you will not finish the list before the urge has subsided. A tidbit of extra advice, put prayer somewhere on that list, I know that when I would feel the urge to cut prayer didnt always work but sometimes it did.

I have a habit of hitting myself as well. I have given myself quite the smack although sometimes I do think I need it at times..

I pray that you never move to actual cutting, it is very very addicting, person hurts those around them including God and chances are there will never be a day that you will not be reminded of it, thanks to the scars..
