  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

SPOILER ALERT (for those who have not yet seen the movie, this could give away details that would "spoil" the movie for you).

JJ Abrams pleasantly surprised my wife and I. I am the Trekker, she is the tolerant one, who now is looking forward to the next ST movie (we both are).

Her critique is that the characters are young and interact better. One is drawn into the story Action was non stop. One cares about the characters of the movie.

What's a Trekker?
;)

I don't know who made that term up, but I'll be a Trekkie until they pry the phaser from my cold, dead hand!
:p

This was my complaint as well. At least nobody woke up at the end and said "man, what a bad dream!"
;)

Good: Effects were awesome. A bit over-done, but compelling. Casting was amazing!! I love the cast. All of them. This alone with bring me back for the sequel. Relationships between characters were very well played.
Bad: SPOILER ALERT!! Blowing up Vulcan was flat out wrong. Period. As was killing Spock's mom.
Huh?: What exactly was that red gloop and why should I care? And why didn't the Romulans from the past just fix the future instead of going postal on Spock? That I didn't get.

But I have to hand it to future Spock for deciding to stick with the altered timeline instead of sling-shotting around the Sun again to change everything back.

I went into the movie with no expectations but an open mind. I learned a lesson from the boycott of ENT (a series of strokes of genius, realized only in syndication, too late for the ongoing commercial venture of new episodes). Shades of TOS and lessons never learned (at least until now).

JJ Abrams was smart to go around the nerd factor... who is as prone to bicker as are theologians. I was going to say "it's just a show people, get a l--" but I suppose it really is a religion of sorts to those types.

Too bad.

There are a lot of false religions in the world: golf, sex, greed...

Anyway the movie was great! It had hole in the science and plot but what Star Trek movie or episode doesn't?

DH & I went Wednesday night (I was out of town when the movie came out and we promised to see it together, otherwise we would have been there opening night)... we saw it in IMAX... it was SO worth it! Though now I dunno if I'll be able to watch it on DVD 'cuz it just won't be the same lol

I've seen TOS in reruns and grew up on TNG... I'm still catching up on the movies, but considering this was a prequel, it didn't matter. I had a problem with a couple of plot points, but am not bothered enough by them to let them ruin this awesome movie for me.

Good point. Time travel is too much of a cop out quite often...

D/W says she is now a trekkie and she thought trekkers were guys and trekkies were girls... :p LOL

Havn't seen it yet...but I've got a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach about it in spite of all of the raving reviews I've read. It really seems like this new thing is Star Trek in name only. From what I gather, they build a bridge between the old and the new...and then burn the bridge.

I'm sure it is a great sci-fi movie...great special effects and all...but how can they show respect for the original by blowing it all up?

You pegged it about right.

The rave reviews are basically from all the effects. But still, not a bad movie overall.

I have to say that as a fan of everything up to DS9 (I just got tired midway through), I loved the movie. They keep the character dynamics from the original and introduce a plot device that keeps the original storyline intact for the purists but leaves them room to expand on this one. Pretty neat idea, IMHO.

I enjoyed the movie. My wife and I are both "Trekkies" and thought that the movie was made to allure non-trek viewers.

We were caught off guard when we saw Vulcan get destroyed (and Spock's mom killed), but quickly understood the impact of the NCC-1701 crew that we were now being introduced being from an alternate timeline.

So it's like... forget everything you THOUGHT you knew about Star Trek because this alternate timeline crew can pretty much give the writers the creative liberty to do whatever the heck they want with the crew.

Including giving Uhura and Spock a makeout session in the transporter room!!!! (another thing that caught us all by surprise).

I thought Kirk's smugness during the Kobayashi Maru test was hilarious.

This is the part that gives me indegestion. If they are going to change tihngs that much...then why bother making it Star Trek at all? Seems that they're using Star Trek as bait for a hook to something completely different.

I wouldn't consider myself a 'purist' by any means. I've immensley enjoyed the game Star Fleet Battles, which plays around a lot with alternate timeline stuff post-original series. Just seems to me that this production company has finally finished the job that Berman started.

I watched the Trialers for Star trek.
It looks good, except for one thing,
Only one female in the main characters?

Kirk was always charming the alien women, Was this something he learned later on? After months/years in space?

Spock and Kirk fight?
Looks like one of the Federation ships gets destroyed. (badly damaged and Kirk getting out of a escape pod?)

If Kirk isn't sweeping women off their feet, it just won't seem like Star trek.

oh yea, interesting point- "This film not yet rated"

Mmm. I liked Star Trek. I liked how there were alternate timelines. Like how we have choices we can make that can effect our futures.

I liked the love the father had to get his son born. He gave up his own life.

I read two good reviews, no three, which got me to watch it:

1. noted how Kirk's childhood was changed because he had no dad to watch over him, so he did stuff like steal that car
2. another one noted how ... I forget, actually, but there was another interesting comment a reviewer made
3. one of my relatives suggested I go see it

I did find it a passing movie, though. It had value for the time, but now, I don't really think of it much.

I did like how Kirk cheated on the main test to win it which Spock devised... and how Kirk was charming but also knew he knew best what to do, so he seized command.
