  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I watched the Trialers for Star trek.
It looks good, except for one thing,
Only one female in the main characters?

Kirk was always charming the alien women, Was this something he learned later on? After months/years in space?

Spock and Kirk fight?
Looks like one of the Federation ships gets destroyed. (badly damaged and Kirk getting out of a escape pod?)

If Kirk isn't sweeping women off their feet, it just won't seem like Star trek.

oh yea, interesting point- "This film not yet rated"

I always visit Wikipedia to find out information before watching the movie. Star Trek's $150 million 2 hour movie should not be missed by fans. I am not interested in storytelling with twists and turns. I like watching and hearing the destructive technology of human versus alien many centuries later where peace could become a short holiday break. I predict Universe World War 3 between different living planets becoming far worse than World War 1 and 2. Bible prophecy does not mention anyone living today to give a perfect prediction of World War 3. My prediction of this Universe World War 3 many centuries later between human and alien could unjokingly come true.

this is an excellent movie to go to... the cool thing for me is that this movie opens 3 days before my birthday, so this is a VERY awesome birthday present :D

and I know how you feel, sparks will fly... most of my friends really don't care for the movie, and the only one who does will be busy, so I'm gonna have to go see it by myself as well... oh well, you're not alone

I have never ever been interested in any of the ST movies or tv shows.

But this movie looks amazing for some reason.
I'm with you there. I never had any interest in ST, but when I saw the trailer I was strangely intrigued.

SPOILER WARNING

It's been a few years since the last Star Trek movie. That combined with Enterprise practically left Trek for dead. Like with Batman and James Bond, it was time for a reboot. That's what we got with Star Trek. For the first time in years, I felt like I was actually watching Star Trek. Think of the potential that Enterprise had with "Broken Bow" and multiply that by about ten.

1) The Good:
-Special effects: What more can be said about this? Eat your heart out, George Lucas. This is how CGI is done.
-The premise: How do you justify a reboot of the Star Trek franchise and simultaneously make purists scream like there's no tomorrow? Turn Trek on its head in a way the Mirror Universe never could and you have this movie. It makes you wonder what the Mirror Universe is like for this alternate timeline, but that's a topic for possibly another film. A villain alters history, creating a new timeline and breathing new life into the franchise in the process.
-Nero: Eric Bana gave us one of the best Star Trek villains since the Borg Queen, though I'd have to say Nero is a step above that. He's not quite Khan, but his madness put him in on a similar level.
-Christopher Pike in a Star Trek movie: Enough said.

2) The Bad:
-The Star Wars Connection: Given how much Star Wars has influenced science fiction since 1977, it was almost inevitable that it would creep into Star Trek. I like Star Wars more than Star Trek, but the action in this film was reminiscent of a Star Wars movie. This is due to Abrams liking Star Wars more than Star Trek, so his preferences ended up in this film.

3) The Ugly:
-Forget the Physics: Black holes are not wormholes and you're going to get crushed like Vulcan and the Harada did if you get caught in a black hole. You're not going to end up in the past. While it's a common science fiction cliche from times past, I was hoping I wouldn't see this plot device ever again.

Overall, I'd give this movie an 8 out of 10. This movie actually gives me hope for the franchise again.

I only really have two problems with the movie.

1) Some of the effects were a little ott and made it hard to follow the action. I thought the worst was the initial battle between the Kelvin and Nero's ship.

2) Nero's motivations to destroy the Federation didn't really make that much sense. Why would a proud Romulan blame Federation for failing to save his homeworld, itself the heart of a powerful empire?

I enjoyed this and thought it was better than expected (despite the aforementioned bad science), but did we really need another Star Trek plot about time travel and alternate timelines?
This was my complaint as well. At least nobody woke up at the end and said "man, what a bad dream!"
;)

Good: Effects were awesome. A bit over-done, but compelling. Casting was amazing!! I love the cast. All of them. This alone with bring me back for the sequel. Relationships between characters were very well played.
Bad: SPOILER ALERT!! Blowing up Vulcan was flat out wrong. Period. As was killing Spock's mom.
Huh?: What exactly was that red gloop and why should I care? And why didn't the Romulans from the past just fix the future instead of going postal on Spock? That I didn't get.
