  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Staff and Member discussion thread.

Oooooo I like! That way it wouldn't necessarily be axed, just moved so it wouldn't disrupt the more "tranquil" atmosphere in the general forum.
I don't think the issues that brought us here should be up for debate, also how different groups(MJ or others, )view Torah shouldn't be up for debate

Yummy, yeah even thinking about the past few weeks I would love to nix the debate ideas till we get back to some good discussion first....perhaps a "light debate" tag in here or what ever it was Lulav suggested earlier

I can only imagine how much more wild it was for Christ who had people leaning on him as well..seeing how different culture was for them, just as it is today ( 311 )

John 13:22-24
Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

Most guys today would be freaked out seeing another dude leaning up on others, but it's not as crazy as folks think. Done it myself with my close friends as well as hugging/crying and holy kisses--and it was all good

All of it within the spirit that others have been seeking to achieve here when it comes to unity amongst brothers/sisters:

A dance club? I could get behind that!

On staff We use to Skype or text as a group while watching movies or football games
It was fun I forgot about that

We also use to to have all night chat groups , those were fun too.....that would be great for Shavuot!

It'd be sticky, of course, for others believing that dance should not be done in MJish fellowships...but then again, that's why it's a club since not all have to be in it

Would definately join in with ya if you make one...

Perhaps we could get that in action as soon as possible.

Small world after all...and glad to know that there's connection in the means of fellowship. To be clear, however, the smaller discipleship group that meets on Thursdays (Mivdad) is held in the home of the congregation leader who lives near it while the larger congregtion as a whole all meet on Saturdays in one of the church buildings.

Not sure that would work unless something is done about Icons of Convenience, as keeps being said on these threads.

Hi Tishri,

Great idea, as long as the OP gets to determine if it devolves into debate.
Wheeeeeel I don't think we should open that can of worms, seeing how carried away it can get in here
What can of worms? I'm not sure I understand what you are getting at. Not sure you understood my intentions either.

There is nothing so frustrating as starting a thread to discuss the finer nuances of a topic and have it hijacked by people that want to debate something else. The OP should be given a certain amount of leeway in determining what is off topic in their own thread (in consensus with Moderator approval of course). Is there a consequence to this line of thinking that I'm not seeing?

That's what I meant. What did you think I meant?

Hi Talmidium.

It's not unreasonable to put stipulations in an OP, as they can help define the scope of a discussion. If it's a specific question for a specific "group", it can be specified that one is looking for answers only from members of that "group" (although others are always welcome to post in fellowship in these threads); if it's a specific question for an individual, don't start a thread, send a PM.

Using stipulations to limit the scope of a discussion in an OP also helps staff when a post is reported for off topic.

Good morning on this wonderful Shabbat.

Brother Talmidim,

In addition to what Supervisor Mark said above, if someone or several members start taking your topic and turning it into something entirely different like "how they milk cows in Buffalo," we have staff you can contact who will help get the thread back on topic if we find it necessary. For now, the team members laid out in this thread would be the people to contact for assistance. Make sense?

Also, if you'd rather make a kind post before contacting staff saying something like, "Brothers and sisters, as the OP I think we're getting off topic. Let's return to the OP. I appreciate your help and God bless you" might be all you need.

Now if you do this and someone starts giving you guff or it doesn't get back on topic then we still have the option of contacting one of the MJ Helping Staff as I said above.

Shalom, David

Shalom Mark, Shalom Sacerdote,

Thanks for more fully stating my case. That is exactly what I meant.

I have no illusions of giving OPs 'Mod like' powers. I even said in my post, "The OP should be given a certain amount of leeway in determining what is off topic in their own thread (in consensus with Moderator approval of course)."

I apologize if I was not clear, but it seems to me that we are saying the same thing. I also agree that often all it takes is a nudge in the right direction. On the other hand, sometimes the 'herding cats' analogy seems more on point. Thanks again guys.
