St. Maximos the Greek

In every icon of St. Maximos the Greek he is depicted with a HUGE beard. Is there any significance to the size of his beard other than the fact he could grow one that large?

There was a story of a monk named Methodios who had an abnormally long beard:

Perhaps it is due to his beard being torn ? The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints

I can't find much but that book talks about St Maximos' beard.
