And despite the first eval's dire statement about autism, Owen really is not autistic. He makes eye contact (in fact, is very social and loving), does not have any autistic-type behaviors. This "therapist" heard us say that Owen likes to line up his trains and decided on the basis of that that he was probably autistic. Needless to say, we're no longer working with her.
Also, Owen's speech delay is pretty mild--only about 30%. Most of my mom friends have told me that their second/third child, especially if male, had a speech delay. We'll probably teach him some signing to help communicate while his speech is catching up, but I suspect the problem will resolve, with therapy, within a year.
Shoot the messenger! (just an expression of frustration). That is stupid to focus on one point. Sure perseverative (repetitive) behaviors are just one sign of the autism spectrum, but there must be other indications. Did she share with you any other indications? According to the DSM-IV she must follow the guidelines. You as a parent have the right to see her full diagnosis and how she reached her decision. The DSM-IV has a strict definition.
