Speaking of the differences in British - American words that popped up in the "Chilled dog" thread, here are some more examples. We who speak the "Queen's English" have to aquaint ourselves with a lot of Americanism's to understand movies, etc. Sometimes the American word would be adopted as an alternative for our own, but usually not, except for American slang, which is contagious.:)

Examples: Elevator - Lift
Apartment - Flat
Hood (car) - Bonnet
Trunk(car) - Boot
Gasoline - Petrol
Pharmacy - Chemist (But Pharmacy is also widly used)
Black Top - Tarred Road
Condo - TownHouse
Windshield - Windscreen (wipers)
Soda pop - Cool Drink (sweet & carbonated)

This list is not exhaustive, and if anyone can think of others, please add them.
Then there are items I miss which are unavailable here, like Root Beer. (I'm half American, so that side comes out in me now and then.);)

 Good morning!

Matrona, I agree with Lotar--a change of phone number and perhaps a restraining order are called for.

Owen has just completed a motor-skills evaluation with an occupational therapist. Sheesh! Six months ago we had an evaluation because we thought he *might* have a *little* speech delay. We figured he'd have an evaluation and maybe a few therapist appts, and that would be that. Instead, he's had 5 different evaluations, is qualified for federal funding, and we meet with the school district next week about setting up a plan (can't remember the acronym) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Oh, and there was the woman who told us he had autism, which he totally and completely doesn't.

Anyway, it's finally settling down. The OT doesn't think Owen has a motor skills delay (neither did we, so we're not surprised). Most likely, she'll just write up some goals that we can work on with him and one of his therapists. Now we just need to get him started on speech therapy--finally!

An IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) is written by a team of professionals (including the parents and child) for children 3 to 21. Don't let them forget that the parents are the most important team members, since you are the expert on your own child. This is part of the wording of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

An IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) is written for the child and the parents from birth to 3 years.

p.s. I'm doing my internship now.

p.p.s. Autism Spectrum Disorder is often given a child who has difficulty communicating. AAC Devices (Augmented and Alternative Communicative Devices) or Sign Language really helps until the child is able to articulate and pronounce words. The goal is communication however the child may do it. About 25 percent of the children with an early Autism diagnosis will no longer have that diagnosis as they grow and mature.

Do whatever you can at home to continue therapy, that is the best plan. The most successful parents homeschool their child in addition to therapy (and schooling).

Have you read HITCHHIKING THROUGH ASPERGERS? It's awesome. It's the story of a child who was diagnosed with Autism and then finally Aspergers. The story is more about the parents and what they did to help their children reach their full potential. There are some people with Autism or Aspergers who have gone on to receive doctorate degrees, so don't let labels frighten you.

More and more research is pointing to environmental factors - prenatally with perhaps a genetic predisposition (more common in engineering types?) Still much research needs to be done, but the brains of autistic people show an underdeveloped subcortical structure, which normally develops in a child around 6 to 8 weeks of gestional age (prenatal period of life).

The good news is that the autism rate is now leveling out - which may show a correlation with the mercury preservatives used in past innoculations. In California and in other states, these mercury preservatives (Thimersol) are no longer used as mandated by new laws. Thank goodness.

So, I need to know the phone number of hte apartment I'm at for various reasons and it'd be nice to know today. So, I left a note last night on the kitchen table saying, "What's the phone number here?" I know the phone works, I've heard it ring before. I got up this morning and it was on the ground [the table's by an open window, probably blew off]. So, I left for work. When I got back for lunch, one of my roommates was eating lunch and I asked him about it and he had no clue, he doesn't use it. So the other roommate is the only one who knows. But he's never here, our dialogue is always through the medium of notes and checks. He writes me a note saying the utilities are due and tapes it to my door, I write a check and tape it to his door. Within 4 days, the check is gone. This is inconvenient. So, I tried to dial out and I just can't get the phone to work. Now, I know the phone works, because it was listed on the utilities and I glanced at the phone bill and noted that we pay to keep it unlisted. Hmm. Well, at least I can eat cheese today. Later, The Pub!

And where are you James? In Oz? or just in Amerika with a french flag?

I'm in the US, Arkansas to be precise. The French flag is just a lil' show of support for those who are the brunt of one too many criticisms. ;)

Oh, btw, to answer your question in another thread, I use IE. I've heard of Firefox (or is it Foxfire? ), but I've never tried it.

Hope you're having a great day :)

Ah, thank you Aria. It's the ISFP that we're doing, since Owen is not yet three.

And despite the first eval's dire statement about autism, Owen really is not autistic. He makes eye contact (in fact, is very social and loving), does not have any autistic-type behaviors. This "therapist" heard us say that Owen likes to line up his trains and decided on the basis of that that he was probably autistic. Needless to say, we're no longer working with her.

Also, Owen's speech delay is pretty mild--only about 30%. Most of my mom friends have told me that their second/third child, especially if male, had a speech delay. We'll probably teach him some signing to help communicate while his speech is catching up, but I suspect the problem will resolve, with therapy, within a year.

It probably is, but I don't have it, the other roommate does. I just remember glancing at it once and seeing the unlisted number fee.

Dial the operator and ask what number you're calling from. They can do it instantly.
