  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yikes! What awful behavior! :o

Maybe you should have "accidentally" poured that water on his iPod. :ebil:

If it had been for a short hopper it wouldn't have been such a big deal. This was for over 6 hrs (an 8h 40 mins flight)... and everything from speedmetal to Bruce Springsteen.
I'm still just so flabbergasted that someone who is probably between 50 and 60 can't have more tact. I mean a teenager would be more likely to turn it down even. I almost talked to the stewards onboard but they aren't as confrontational in Europe as they are in the US.

They should be glad I did not sit next to them. I would have made sure the person was taken and placed in the cargo compartment for the duration of the flight. On my flight back Sat evening I had to listen to a 3 year old child talk, scream, cry, etc. for the 3 hour flight from Houston, and that nearly drove me nuts. I can just imagine having a rude frenchmen next to me for 6 hours!

If he was old, he may not have realized that his music was so loud. Older peeps don't always have such good hearing and it can be problematic when they think their music is at an acceptable volume and it's actually driving everyone around them nuts. Still, he was very rude and I would have complained if I were you.

I thought it was bad when I sat next to a guy who was a complete oblivious jerk - we hit turbulence and it spilled my drink all over me and my bag under the seat. It didn't splash him at all, but he wasn't any help at all, just sat there completely oblivious. Couldn't even be bothered to ask the steward for a paper towel for me when he passed by right after the drink spill, I had to call him myself while my drink was soaking through my clothes.

And on the way back I had to sit in the middle seat between two complete strangers. I had Armrest Wars with the guy at the window, who kept throwing one of those pricey junk catalogues back and forth with his wifey in the seat behind him, but the aisle guy was nice and quiet and let me use the armrest on his side.

Okay, at the bottom of this page on my browser there's a website for "the canonization of the Servant of God Demetrius Gallitzin".

Tell me more, please.

It is not at the bottom of my page.

I know the Gallitzin family. They used to attend my church until they moved away about two years ago. Very holy people.

Esp since we were on different continents and I had to pay 10 bucks to watch the game (thanks freaking EU)... And for once I think I was cursing mom's internet more than I was the refs... :sorry:

You guys up north are still lucky to have 'optic fiber' TV for internet. Here 'Broadband' is HSPDA wireless, which is what I'm on at the moment. It's OK for watching you-tube, but anything heavier (Faster) would have to be a Sat TV broadcast.:sigh:
But it's OK, Broadband is on the way; All our streets are being dug up at the moment for laying optic fiber for local broadband use. (Has to be in place for the 2010 Soccer World cup + HDTV.)
Of course, all our local cities were connected by Optic Fiber in the late 80's, and all our undersea links are Optic Fiber. But till now the 'Last Mile' has always been copper wire. (Or wireless, like myself) It's soooo frustrating waiting for a video to buffer!!!

How has life been with the recent troubles in Jo'burg, Kolya? You are safe in your area, yes?

Well, I am very concerned about what is going on here and most of us are being 'ashamed' of being South African again. This Xenophobic thing has been building up for a while though, but the criminal element takes advantage of it. It's confined mostly to the poor shanty-town areas and we take precautions when setting out from home. There are talks about bringing in the military to put down the insurrection, but most police forces reckon they can deal with it. But it could spread to anywhere, so your prayers for our safety are appreciated.

What concerns me even more is that this could spread to other parts of the world. Mexicans entering the USA comes to mind. And Third World immigrants to Europe may also soon be targets. One thinks it can't happen in your area, think again. We live in challenging times! But of course we who have a Faith to cling to need not fear the Terror by night or the Arrow at midday!

Kolya, my prayers.

It is not "Mexicans" entering the USA that is the major concern, but the hardened members of criminal drug cartels from Columbia and other countries along with fanatical extremists from islamic groups who are entering the USA from Mexico and Canada.

Those are the chief dangers facing us.

Christ is Risen!

How are you doing, Ma?

I decided against writing the thesis as they wanted me to stay for two more years when English majors can finish the thesis in one semester. So, I will be taking the comps and publishing an article instead.

True, yes, but they're taking your jobs too! The trouble here is that the foreigners are willing to work for 'slave' wages, so they get 'jobs'! This does not go down too well with the locals, so one does understand the reason for discontent, but we do not sympathize with their reactions! BTW, most foreign Africans have been the most industrious by being entrepreneurs and making their own way. This causes jealousy with the 'lazy' locals who mostly prefer to beg (or wait for 'alternative' employment) for a living, so the foreigner's businesses have been torched! Very sad.

Well, one would hope that even if he was half deaf he was quite able to hear what the steward asked him... and didn't pay any attention to: Could you please turn that down a little? in both English and Swedish (which was his native language)....
Philothei, I would but it was a sold out flight and I had a nice aisle seat just like I wanted.

Not at my mom's, she has ASDL and on VERY old phone lines (and she's at the very very end of a large network) so she gets maybe 1/5th of the advertized speed... if that...

You are right safety is a relative notion. I hope things calm down in your place soon.

But I'm not too worried about this sort of unrest spreading globally. Such local disturbances tend not to be contagious.
