  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

CH Spurgeon Conference, Sermon 3
Dr. Tom Schreiner, Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky
I did learn that 'later' these sermons will be available on www.sermonaudio.com and/or www.foundersbaptist.org in addition to being available for ordering the CDs.
My brain feels somewhat scrambled this morning as taking in all that information left me in a daze. I love how he speaks, yet taking notes is difficult as I need to focus totally on his face to keep up!!

Limited Atonement,or Particular Redemption or Definite Atonement(actually preferred term)
Before beginning his sermon Dr. Tom Schreiner prayed that we would all be as the Bereans and search the Word to varify these truths!
Christ did not just make it possible but He purchased salvation for His chosen ones, the elect!
In eternity past the Father chose some for the Son, the Holy Spirit applied His work in a wonderful concert of harmony!
Christ took our place-died for all our sins, including unbelief!
Romans 8:28-31 (context is limited to the elect)
John 10:11 good shepherd-specific to sheep, or elect
v 16 they WILL listen to my voice
Peter Cameron Scott went to Africa in 1867. He personally buried his brother, died from malaria. He knew there were sheep there that he must bring in. He later died also but others followed his work and brought in the sheep to Christ, beginning Africa Inland Mission.
Ephesians 5:25 Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her. He died for His people
Hebrews 10:14 By one offering--those who are being sanctified.
Definite in accomplishing what He intended for His people.
Rev 5:9,10 He bought them, this was a purchase!
He spoke of a couple in his church from a primitive tribe who were translating scripture into their own language and planned to return to their home at great risk, taking their two small children. Why? They knew there were some of His purchased ones there needing to hear the gospel. We must be faithful, not knowing who the purchased ones are, sharing the gospel with all we can!
Acts 20:28"the church of God, which He purchased"
Mt. 1:21 "He will save His people from their sins"
Heb 2:8-16
v 10 call them brethren
v13 I and the children God has given me
v 16 seed of Abraham, (believers, not seed of Adam which would be all people)
2 Cor 5:11-21
'all' believers died with Christ
v 17 as new believers Christ grants us life
v 21 substitution

I admit to the great inadequacy of these notes but acknowledge the vast amount of information he shared! I also will get the CD's to keep for future reference and use and to even clarify my own scant notes!

God bless! Soli deo gloria!

I like that Washington State idea. Or possibly even Portland, OR would be wonderful.

We will forward your interest to Mr Schriner. The conference has been absolutely amazing. The scripture study and insite is great. I have been transcribing my notes and want to dig deeper into all the references he uses. I can hardly wait for tonight's session.

T U L 'I' P, Irristible Grace, or overcoming grace, indicating that He overcomes our unbelief and sinfulness with His grace!
First, a focus on 'Hyper'-calvinism, which we are not, as it is unbiblical. Some areas of error in hypercalvinism are:
1) teaches doctrine of effectual justification, when we
place faith in Christ.
2) denies necessity to repent and be saved
3) restricts invitation only to the elect
4) says one should not believe until they 'feel' it in their
heart
5) denies universal love of God
6) denies need for missions, prayer, and evangelism.

True calvinism makes us more humble, entirely dependent on God, not critical of others or arrogant!
God's grace woos and wins over the elect in calling people to faith in the gospel.
Acts 7:51 'you always resist the Holy Spirit'
He overcomes their resistance with grace, the 'effectual call', His summons.
John 6:35 'He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.'
"comes", "believes" same reality, two different ways to describe.
v.37 All who the Father gives will come and who comes I will never cast out.
v.39 this is the Fathers will, that all who come I should lose nothing.
v44 NO one can come unless the Father draws him and I will raise him up on the last day.(cannot mean prevenient grace) Is 54 speaks of New Covenant work.
v.63 It is the 'Spirit" who gives life
v.65 I said to you no one can come unless it is granted by the Father.
We deserve hell and He has granted us life.
1 Cor 1:21 in the wisdom of God the World through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe
v23 we preach Christ crucified(we preach universally to all people)
v.24 but to those who are called(effectually) Christ the power and wisdom of God
v.26 consider your calling
v.28 "calling" is connected with God choosing
v.29 so that we would take no credit. It is all about Him, not us, to bring glory to Him
Romans 8:28 the "called" as predestined; those predestined in eternity past He called then in history at a determined time. The called are justified. Only the effectually called are justtified and all the justified are glorified.
As Lazarus; dead until called forth to life
Ephesians 2:1-10 You were dead in sin
v.4 But God being rich in mercy due to HIs love with which He loved us....
even when we were dead in trespasses He made us alive. Grace is a gift, power
We have all eternity to understand His grace and to praise Him for our salvation.
v.8 no boasting as we are saved by grace thru faith, it is a gift of God
v.9 not of works
v.10 His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works(comes as the evidence of salvation)
2 Timothy 2:24-26 v.25 God grants repentance
(they know the truth after He grants repentance)
2 Thessalonians 2:8 destroyed by the word of Jesus and the brightness of His coming.
Satan deceived them, judicial hardening. They did not receive the truth that they may be saved.
v.13 we are bound to give thanks, because God chose you for salvation from the beginning.
v.14 to which He called you by our gospel for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The means He uses is the preaching of the gospel and effectual calling.
Soli deo gloria! Such a wonderful sermon and I so hope you will get these, save them and enjoy them always!

As an added blessing a former coworker was in the congretation and spotted me and after the service came to me, in total awe of what she had heard! She said she had been praying the Lord would guide her to a church where the whole truth was preached! I'd not seen her in more than 20 years and she was so totally different now. What a special blessing from our Lord to allow me to get such a glimpse of His awesome power in a life!

Tonight is the last message on the TULIP and will be on Perseverance of the saints, or as he states is more accurately stated as Preservation of the saints, giving glory to His keeping of us, not our keeping of Him!

Dr. Tom Schreiner preached 5 sermons on T U L I P.
Wednesday nights sermon focused on the 'P', Perseverance of the saints, or more accurately 'Preservation of the saints, indicating ALL salvation is of the Lord, including our assurance and safekeeping!

Grace covers the elect from eternity past to eternity future. All benefits apply to the elect.
When God chooses the elect in eternity past, He then woos His chosen through preaching down in history at His designated time in their life. A good example of His grace invading a life is the conversion of Apostle Paul. Paul was overcome by His persuasive encouraging grace. By the same grace God saves each of His own and then preserves them to the end. When truly saved His own will never apostasize. If the accurate term was 'Perseverance' of the saints it would indicate that we persevere and cling to Him for safekeeping. The true term is 'preservation' as God saves us and then keeps us.
1 Peter 1:3-5 speaks of our inheritance incorruptible reserved for us, who are 'kept' by the power of God through faith(which He gave to us as a gift).
Whatever is not of faith is sin.
God is the one who grants us our faith.
Lk 22:31 the Lord to Peter regarding Satan wanting to sift him as wheat. The Lord said "I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail; and when you have returned to Me strengthen your brethren."
Peter did fall but repented and desired to be saved.
Judas was remorseful but didnt repent nor have a desire to be saved.
Some people say they feel sorry for Judas, but Judas had no desire for the Lord. Do not feel sorry for Judas but give thanks to the Lord for His great mercy on Peter and on yourself!!
John 10:27-29 I give to them eternal life(a life in which you will never perish)
An armenian claims one can leave their salvation by choice but scripture declares that once saved no one can snatch them from His hand.
"Who saved me in the first place?"
I trust in Him and not in myself!
Romans 8:28-30 predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.
sequence: foreknew, predestined, called, justified, sanctified, glorified.
God is for us!
v.34 regarding guilt. Who are you to claim guilt if God has said 'clean'.
v.35 even in dying for Him. Not our love for Him but His for us.
v.37 more than conquerors because of the power of His love.
v.38 Wesley believed one could lose their salvation by giving it up.
The worst that could happen still would not cause us to be separated from Him in any way.
Jude: written to the 'called', called and preserved in Jesus.
v.24,25 preventing of apostasy. He will present you blameless on the last day
Mt. 10:22 He who endures to the end will be saved. (indication of the truly chosen, they endure)
Thomas Cranmer was truly a godly man who when threatened with burning at the stake then recanted. However, the Holy Spirit claimed him, knew him to be a true believer and Cranmer did recant his recantation and when burned at the stake he placed the hand into the fire that had signed his first recanting of his belief!
Romans 11:22 God will preserve His own.( you will continue in the faith if you are His own, no matter what)
God used warnings to keep us in the faith.
If one lapses they may not be saved at all or it could be a temporary lapse as Cranmer and be reclaimed as a true believer.
1John 2:19 shows that those here spoken of were never saved.
Mt 7:21 Christ declares, "I never knew you"
1 Cor. 11:18-19 that the real believers may be recognized.
2 Timothy 2:16 The Lord knows those who are His.
The chosen were purchased in His death and they will never totally fall away. They may have a temporary fall but return as reclaimed by the owner, Christ Jesus.

This concludes my notes on his sermons. I pray the scriptures will be of help to someone. I know the notes were inadequate and urge you to order the CDs or listen when they are available on sermonaudio.
Soli deo gloria!
