The only real issue I have with Spore is that it is actually more representative of theistic evolution and Intelligent Design than true evolution. But I guess a truly evolutionary game would be boring as heck, since the player wouldn't actually be doing anything.

Nonetheless, I can't wait to get it.

Really? One of the clips I watched showed them--I assumed they were the spores---arriving from outer space.

Isn't that one possibility of ID? Albeit one that just pushes the question of where life came from back a step from Earth to wherever the spores come from.

The player is still involved in moulding the progress of the creatures, correct? That's pretty much TE.

Do you two really see this game as an anti-evolutionary propaganda piece?

No, not at all. I see it as much more pro-evolution than anti-evolution. But because it does claim to be based on evolution, and because it does require user input as a sort of intelligent designer, creationists could grab hold of it and say "See! Evolution needs someone to make it work! Hence, God exists!"

On the other hand, for those who hold that life is unchanging, it does go against that extreme view.

Whatever, it's a game. And I will play it; I get to be God, which is apparently what atheists really want to do.

They've released the creature creator as a sort of demo for the game.

I haven't tried it, it'll drive me nuts being able to create the creatures then not being able to do anything with them until the game comes out.

WILL WRIGHT WHY DO YOU TORMENT US SO?!

I've been more concerned about the draconian copy-protection that has been in the works for Spore (as well as the PC version of Mass Effect).

Originally, the game was set to authenticate itself every 10 days over the internet, and would disable the game if the check was not performed. The game would also disable itself if, during the check, it discovered the CD key had become blacklisted/revoked by the publisher because the CD key had been found to circulate around warez sites. (And, as some of the Windows Genuine Advantage authentication fiascoes have shown, your CD key can get out without you sharing it in the first place). Fortunately, this was scrapped due to public outcry, and the only authentication that will occur now only happens when you first install the game. (source)

Apparently the only catch is that you'll only be allowed to perform 3 installs by the authentication process. And if you uninstall the game, you don't get one of those 3 installs back. Still pretty bad, if you ask me. (source)

I wonder if it has a "god" mode with unlimited power :)

I just love there copyprotection
It doesn't do anything to stop those that want to copy it, but makes it a real pain if I rebuild my system too many times.

Guess If I get it, I'll be looking for a patch also.

Ok, so it's like bioshock... while still retarded I can live with.

The intro suggests abiogenasis while the gameplay is in the guise of ID. I have the creature creator and its a lot of fun, Cant wait for the full game.

Ok you talked me into it, I'll try out the creature creator.

Yes... and no..... there is a point in the evolution of your race that you become space faring, you can then go to other planets... invade them.... kidnap their young races and perform experiments upon them...

ANNNND... the best thing about that is.... when you go to another planet and raid it, you are not seeing a computer generated species... you are seeing another players race.
