I'm so afraid of spiders. They look scary, and they can do damage. I mean, it's a heartless, eight-legged creature with fangs that can spew out stringy goo to make a trap so that it can tie up and digest creatures from the outside.

Yet, I always open these kinds of threads anyway.

I love 'em, she hates 'em, which is why I'll never have a tarantula in the house.

I'm so afraid of spiders. They look scary,

Oh, no, they look quite fascinating. In pictures. Though I don't usually mind the live ones that share a habitat with me.

I'm a lot more afraid of wasps. Put me in a room with a spider, and I'll quietly keep an eye on it if it's a particularly scary-looking one. Put me in a room with a wasp, and I'll break out in a cold sweat and whimper. You can take that literally.

Maybe it would be different if we had more dangerous spiders in these parts, though

Technically, spiders are not heartless (And the web material comes out of the opposite end to their fangs.)

Heh, I was reading up on some care for spiders sites and the camel spider FAQ is great. Other than 'don't don't don't ever ever try to keep one' the best info tidbit was that if it gets out of its tank and sees you - don't run, it will catch you

I've seen caterpillars do similar things to trees.

And then there is the Irish Moss that hangs from trees.

However, if you have caterpillars, then you are bound to have spiders eating them. What a combination.

I think that's one of the points about enclosing their feeding grounds in silk. They don't want the bad guys to get in.

I don't really know much about them, I just saw the poor trees with bits encased in silk. It was also quite a long time ago.

Was it a Chinese Elm? I think they get attacked by caterpillars that spin webs. I remember looking up and seeing numerous caterpillars dangling from silk strands, but I cannot remember the type of tree. That was quite a while ago.

I'm glad if I can tell an oak from a beech, so I really don't know what a random tree I saw ten years ago could be :o All I remember is that they were smallish. And about five thousand miles from China
