  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey! I'm looking for some differences between translations of the Bible that may alter the meaning of a word or verse for you. For example, in the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5), NIV says "Patience," and NKJV says "Long Suffering." This is a poor example, I'm looking for some better ones.

I'm not looking to make any point or debate the merits is any translation over another; I would just like some for a lil' project I am doing.

It is pretty easy to give you a few examples.
1) Revelations 17 : 9 - 10 :

In the :
Revised Standard Version; Jerusalem Bible, New American Standard Version, New Revised standard Version, New International Version, Rotherham Version, CEV, TEV, BBE, GOD'S Word, Holman NT, ISV NT, American Standard Version, Wey NT, and Douay - Rheims Bible, the "Seven Headed Beast" is said to have seven heads, which are seven mountians and are also seven kings.

In these Bibles the seven heads, seven mountains and seven kings are ONE AND THE SAME. That is to say the heads ARE Mountains, and the Heads ARE also Kings.

In the King James Version, Darby Bible, New King James Version, LITV, MKJV, and the Young Bibles, the "Seven Headed Beast" is said to have seven heads, which are seven mountains, AND THERE ARE seven Kings.

That is to say that these versions SEPARATE the Mountains from the Kings.

It is this "Separation" of the mountains from the kings, that makes possible those interpretations of "The Babylon that is to be destroyed" i.e. (The "Harlot" riding the Seven Headed Beast) which portray "The Catholic Church" or "Jerusalem", (Both Rome and Jerusalem being cities which sit on seven hills), as the Harlot to be destroyed.

IF however, as I do, you take the View that the "Heads are Mountains, WHICH ARE KINGS" then those interpretations don't wash, because there is no rational explanation for why the hills of Rome or Jerusalem might be called "Kings".

2) Another example is to be found in Genesis 19 : 23.
In the Revised Standard Version, New Revised Standard Version, King James Version, New American Standard version, and New International Version Bibles, it says the sun was up when Lot entered into Zoar.

In the Jerusalem Bible, it says "As the sun rose over the land and Lot entered Zoar". This is different in that the "Sunrise" spoken of is silmultaneous with Lot's entry to Zoar; as opposed to preceeding it.

In the Darby Bible, it says : "The sun rose upon the earth when Lot came to Zoar"

I believe the Son is the God who created the earth, the God who was known to Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses; and the God who brought about both the destruction by the deluge; and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. I believe he is also our Lord Jesus Christ.

See Genesis 18 -19 Regards the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah; and note that key details of the story as pertains to certain anomalies in it may be found in Genesis 19 15 - 29.

See Genesis 19 15 - 29 : Revised Standard Version.
Genesis 19 15 - 29 : When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city." But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him forth and set him outside the city. And when they had brought them forth, they said, "Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley; flee to the hills, lest you be consumed." And Lot said to them, "Oh, no, my lords; behold your servant has found favour in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but I cannot flee to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me, and I die. Behold, yonder city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there––is it not a little one?––and my life will be saved!" He said to him, "Behold, I grant you this favour also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. Make haste, escape there; for I can do nothing till you arrive there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. (The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot came to Zoar.) Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; and he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But Lot’’s wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord; and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and beheld, and lo, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.

Note: Different bibles have dealt with the salient details of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in differing ways. There are two anomalies within the story, the first of which, the various groups of translators have left anomalous; and the second of which, some of the various groups of translators have attempted to paper over in one way or another.

The first is an anomalous limitation of the power of the angels carrying out the destruction; and is consistent in all of my bibles; appearing in Genesis 19 22.

See Genesis 19 22 : Revised Standard Version.
Genesis 19 22 : "Make haste, escape there; for I can do nothing till you arrive there."

Genesis 19 22 : King James Version.
Genesis 19 22 : "Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither."

Genesis 19 22 : Jerusalem Bible.
Genesis 19 22 : "Hurry, escape to it, for I can do nothing until you reach it."

Genesis 19 22 : New International Version.
Genesis 19 22 : "But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it."

Genesis 19 22 : New American Standard Bible.
Genesis 19 22 : "Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there."

Genesis 19 22 : New Revised Standard Version.
Genesis 19 22 : "Hurry, escape there, for I can do nothing until you arrive there."

Genesis 19 22 : Darby Translation.
Genesis 19 22 : "Haste, escape thither; for I cannot do anything until thou art come there."

Note : In all seven different translations that I have, the angel clearly indicates that he is unable,(powerless), to carry out the destruction in such a manner as to spare Lot, until Lot is safely out of; and away from the city. This indicates that the means of destruction was neither mystical nor magical; but rather done in such a manner that had Lot been there, righteous or not, he would surely have died.

Note : The second anomaly pertains to that day’s sunrise being mentioned twice. Keeping in mind that dawn had already broken when the angels awakened Lot; and that Lot tarried before being led by the hand out of the city; and then tarried further, disputing where he should flee to; and finally that the flight to the neighbouring small city would also take some time; one finds it odd that the sunrise should be mentioned again when he arrived in Zoar. Various groups of bible translators have attempted to paper over this "double sunrise" in various ways .

See Genesis 19 15 & 23 : Revised Standard Version.
Genesis 19 15 : When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Arise, take your wife and Your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city."

Genesis 19 23 : The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

Genesis 19 15 & 23 : King James Version.
Genesis 19 15 : And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

Genesis 19 23 : The Sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

Genesis 19 15 & 23 : New American Standard Bible.
Genesis 19 15 : And when morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you will be swept away in the punishment of the city."

Genesis 19 23 : The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

Genesis 19 15 & 23 : Jerusalem Bible.
Genesis 19 15 : When dawn broke the angels urged Lot, ‘‘Come take your wife and these two daughters of yours, or you will be overwhelmed in the punishment of the town’’.

Genesis 19 23 : As the sun rose over the land and Lot entered Zoar,

Note: The first mention of the sunrise is useful information in the sense that it tells us that Lot, the angels and Lot’s family spent the night in Sodom, rather than fleeing during the night. The second mention of the sunrise when Lot entered Zoar, however, provides no new information unless it has been misinterpreted in the four bibles quoted above. In my opinion this is most probably the case. Note that the most accurate translation of the four, (the Jerusalem), gives the timing of this second mention of the sunrise, ("As the sun rose over the land and Lot entered Zoar"), as being simultaneous with Lot’s entrance to Zoar, ("I can do nothing until you reach it "), as opposed to the other three, which in an apparent effort to expunge a double sunrise, have the sun already up.

See Genesis 19 15 & 23 : Darby Translation.
Genesis 19 15 : And as the dawn arose, the angels urged Lot, saying, Up, take thy wife and thy two daughters who are present, lest thou perish in the iniquity of the city.

Genesis 19 23 : The sun rose upon the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

Note : Given that the sun was up when the angels woke Lot, time to dress, time lingering, time getting out of Sodom, time arguing about where he should go, and time getting to Zoar, the timing of this second sunrise to coincide with the moment Lot was seen to be safe assumes ominous significance. Substitute the Darby Translation’’s verse 23 for the Revised Standard’’s on page 16, or better still, substitute : "When Lot came into Zoar, the sun rose upon the earth." then consider the implications. The means of the destruction was such that the angels could not proceed with it until Lot was a good distance away. "The sun rose upon the earth" coincides exactly with the description of the fireball as described by survivors at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Lot’s wife remained exposed to view the destruction, and was "turned to a pillar of salt"; (dehydrated and incinerated until only mineral salts remained). The Lord rained down fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah. The whole valley in which the two cities stood was completely destroyed, even the crops in the fields. The smoke of the destruction rose up like the smoke from a furnace. I believe the description of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah can only make sense if it was carried out with a nuclear weapon.

Note : The idea that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was effected by a nuclear weapon was originally raised by Eric Von Daniken, (Author of Chariots of the Gods, etc.), but was shouted down by a loud chorus of "Pooh Poohs" from the "scientific experts", who pointed out that the scriptures contained no mention of the characteristic "nuclear flash". Von Daniken had not done his homework, so he was unable to refute the experts’’ "Pooh".

1 Timothy 3:16

New King James Version (NKJV)

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory.

King James Version (KJV)
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Amplified Bible (AMP)
And great and important and weighty, we confess, is the hidden truth (the mystic secret) of godliness. He [God] was made visible in human flesh, justified and vindicated in the [Holy] Spirit, was seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, [and] taken up in glory.

New International Version (NIV)
Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.

It's a little more difficult using an NIV to show a JW that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh.
