Please tell me.
Do I need a different external modem for Linex?
I installed Linex on my firewall computer.
I installed different versions,
Ubuntu, Red Hat, Mandrake
The only one who saw my modem was mandrake
And it gave me an error message and could not access it.
Do I need to get a special external modem for Unis?
The modem works fine, and I am using it on
my xp machine to send this to you.
I really like Ubuntu How do I get it to see my modem?

Thanks

Many Winmodems will not work for Linux
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winmodem
Many companies churn those out since they are very inexpensive to manufacture since they use system resources (i.e. CPU and memory) to work. Generally this is something Windows does, Linux usually prefers a modem that does not tie up resources though they are a little more expensive to purchase. What you would need to do most likely is get a regular modem not a winmodem or if you have another computer running that is connected to the Internet you would use a hub or router and access the Internet through that computer from your Linux computer.

It is not impossible to use a Winmodem with Linux necessarily... what is difficult is finding the associated driver. Google winmodems and Linux and a lot of good resources will come up. However, it's not easy to get it to work.

You're definitely better off getting an external modem - but search your choice and verify FIRST its compatibility with Linux.
