There is no way that one can claim the senseless jabbering some people do is the Biblical gift of tongues.

Right. Most cessationist ministries I'm familiar with don't believe all gifts have ceased, and definitely don't believe God doesn't do miracles anymore, but believe certain gifts were meant as sign gifts authenticating the message of Christ's apostles. Therefore once they were gone, the sign gifts were no longer necessary. Most include: the office of apostle itself, prophet (In the sense of revelatory prophecy, not preaching), tongues (a little different; most would relate the gift as primarily a sign of coming judgment to unbelieving Israel until its destruction in 70 A.D., and that the true gift, along with interpretation, only included actual human foreign languages never learned), and healers (not miraculous healing in general though). But there are variations. Some for instance believe that tongues are still for today, but again that they are only actual languages, not ecstatic speech. Haven't actually heard of any who believe in cessation of ALL gifts however. That's a first for me.

There is no way one can claim a counterfeit dollar bill is a real dollar.

btw -- let's add "Jabbering" and "incoherent babble" to 'gibberish' and 'Benny Hinn' Reductio ad Hiterum's...

I've always said about any sign such as tongues or healing:

What doctrine comes with it?

I take a cautious approach when it comes to the Spirit's sign gifts. Does she still distribute them in our day and age? I believe so. Does she do so to the degree that some Christians claim she does? I believe not.

Talking gibberish, pretending, just silly... how very respectful and non-inflammatory.

Interesting to speak of Holy Spirit as "she"; Ttalk...

Greek Pneuma is usually masculine, sometimes neuter, and Hebrew for spirit is feminine.

The unboxable Holy Spirit!

God is masculine, obviously. Jesus is a man. So the Holy Spirit is not feminine in any Scripture.

Just the lowercase word spirit is not the Holy Spirit, but pagan spirits nonbelievers pray to.

I was told to pray for all the gifts and allow the Lord to assign them to me as He wished. Admittedly there were a few I was hesitant to ask for. ;-)

Your words have given me pause. Earlier today I felt an overwhelming sense of His presence. It was almost ecstatic. Tears were streaming down my face and I wanted to let go but I held back. And He's tugging once more.

Gotta love His timing.

I have taught 12 week courses and written a 70 page manual on the Holy Spirit and the Gifts of the Spirit, with an entire section (1/3rd) on tongues. To do so I've done a tremendous amount of studying on the topic. Clearly I can't relay all of that here, but here are a few highlights:
  • All of Gifts of the Spirit are available to every believer through the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
  • The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a separate gift than salvation and is not required to be saved.
  • The Gifts are given as the Spirit wills, but that does not mean some get one and others don't. It means they manifest as He wills (and He is most often willing). In other words, the timing and manner are more important than the who (there is a long biblical history of this). For instance, if you are in a position to pray healing for someone and it is God's kairos timing for that healing, He's not going to look at you and say, "Shoot, I didn't give them the healing gift. I guess I'm out of luck, no healing today!"
  • Some will flow in certain gifts more often than others, but that is usually an extension of their calling.
  • God would not tell us to earnestly desire a gift from Him that wasn't available, that goes against His very nature.
  • There are 3 categories of 3 gifts (a trinity of trinities):
    • Gifts that REVEAL something
    • Gifts that SAY something
    • Gifts that DO something
  • Gifts can (and most often do) work together with one another. Meaning multiple gifts in operation at the same time to accomplish God's will
  • The gift of tongues is "different kinds of tongues" meaning there are different manifestations of the gift. I believe there are 4 major manifestations of the gift with even further distinctions within those 4 types:
    • Tongues for personal edification
    • Tongues for interpretation
    • Tongues as a sign to the unbeliever
    • Tongues for intercession
  • The Gifts of the Spirit are not something only for the advanced or spiritually mature, they are the milk of the word. Arguing and quibbling about definitions of them is the milk, not the meat. In 1 Cor 3 Paul says that the Corinthians have not been able to take the meat of the word, only the milk, and that they still aren't ready for the meat. Which means that everything that follows is milk, including the Gifts.
  • 1 Cor 12 defines the Gifts
  • 1 Cor 13 defines the proper motivation for the Gifts (love). It was not written in context of weddings (although it still applies to them) it was written in context of the Gifts. Without a motivation of love, healing, miracles, prophecy, tongues are just a resounding gong.
  • 1 Cor 14 defines the proper order for the Gifts. Specifically that each local assembly can establish their own unique order, and that's ok, as long as platform is given for the Spirit to move (the order is for man, not for the Spirit)
  • If you read this far, good for you! If you have cake, eat some.

I couldn't sleep, I kept thinking about Acts 2 -- speaking miracle vs hearing miracle -- I still think it's both

Then I thought of when Peter 'took the floor' or whatever; he was addressing ALL the foreigners -- what language was Peter speaking? Aramaic? Hebrew? Greek?

And all the 'visitors' to Jerusalem -- did THEY hear Peter in their own particular tongue -- like Parthian, Pamphylian or whatever ?
