Speaking in tongues

You know this may be slightly off topic, but I always considered my healing to be the day I was baptized in the Spirit. Can't explain why other than the dramatic healing, the drastic change in my life, the increased hunger for scripture and God's Word, but no tongues. I made the mistake of attending a Pentecostal church and they had me convinced it wasn't what I felt it was. So of course they pressured me to speak "tongues", going so far as to say they felt God wanted me to repeat a phrase after them to help start the process. But I never could. I never could because it didn't feel genuine.

Well one day while praying to receive the gift, I heard the Spirit say "Pentecost" and that was it. Well he was telling me exactly when I would receive the gift. Pentecost Sunday was 7 weeks away and I had to persevere until then. So I prayed. Then 2 days before Pentecost as I prayed I felt prompted in my spirit to pray a new language. It didn't sound like a language at all, rather just a series of repeating syllables but none the less I knew this was it. The Spirit was faithful to his word revealed to me.

Now I speak in tongues somewhat regularly, I should do it more. Its no longer just one or two syllables, almost sounds like a real language. Nothing Ive ever heard before but thats okay. It wouldnt be tongues otherwise. Just felt like sharing that here.

GOOD Choice!!!! There are desperate Pentecostals who believe in "Pump Priming", and as a result wind up with folks who THINK they're speaking in tongues - but aren't, and never did.

In My case It was about 3 weeks after I was prayed for to receive the "Baptism", and during a worship time - there was a "new language" in my mind that I spoke, and 40 years later - it's still there.

The gift of tongues for self-edification can be initiated by any believer who is willing to receive it. And God gives it without discretion for those who simply ask.

Most people don't really believe it is genuine because they aren't really using it in the manner in which I believe 1st century believers did, which was liberally.

What I mean to say is, if someone pushes themselves into an extended session (say 40 or more minutes straight) of praying in tongues, they will begin to see the fruit of the Spirit well up within them in a very supernatural and powerful way.

The first 30 minutes may seem like useless babble, but there will come a point when your spirit person is getting really "pumped up," for lack of a better term.

God gave us this gift to help us endure persecution, but since the western church has had it so easy it doesn't even understand the point of tongues. The 1st century church understood the benefit all too well because there were times it was all they could do to endure what they were going through.

This also explains why much of the persecuted church around the world practices the gift of tongues for edification a great deal. Wherever the church is spreading in oppressive nations, tongues are going forth to build up their faith and strength in the face of opposition.

But even in America, I've experienced a measure of attack from liberal co-workers and the foul spiritual forces which try to discourage and dissuade me from what God has called me to be as a witness in the world.

Just a couple weeks ago, I was dealing with a co-worker who was pretty nasty. I walked away from the situation, but the devil wanted to make it an issue. That night, I pushed myself in tongues and rose up above the attack like an eagle flying above storm clouds.

Now there are other forms of tongues, but I have been primarily speaking of the type of tongues which we can initiate ourselves which is to self-edify and build ourselves up in the faith.

There is one caveat, however: When you practice praying in tongues for self-edification daily (an hour or more daily) you need to take care to maintain a position of humility and servant-hood that comes forth from a heart of love. You can get yourself so strong against what others think, say, or do, that you may start stepping on toes instead of humbly washing feet.

Be disciplined; be militant. I often pray in tongues while I do other things. For instance, each morning as I get ready for work, walk the treadmill, and and then drive into work, I pray in tongues for over an hour.

While on the treadmill, I also listen to the Bible. I usually go straight through the New Testament over and over, delving into the Old Testament regularly, too.

As much as the charismatic church has gotten right when it comes to spiritual gifts the last 30 years, I believe it's forgotten the older values of discipline and dedication when it comes to prayer and study of the Word.

I believe this is due in part to a fear of works based salvation, which stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of what salvation actually is. This poor teaching has Christians laying down their arms while on the battle-field, and that's never a profitable tactic when in a war.

I would love to pray one more times in tongues , but I can't , last time I prayed normally was 5 years ago is very sad , I had a major problem , and that problem changed my entire life , just normal praying is a problem for me , I believe that my sin had destroyed my believe , I love Jesus but I fell alone in a big desert without the living water . Please, stop saying such things about your walk with Him. All you need to do is confess this unbelief and begin walking out the Christian life. Spend time in prayer every day, even if you don't feel anything, knowing He is hearing and delighting in every moment with you.

Get in the Word, and begin to renew your mind with the truth. Here is one scripture you should meditate on daily for the next 30 days:

Romans 8:31-39
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be8 against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died-more than that, who was raised-who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.9 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Remember, it doesn't depend upon you. The only thing God wants is that you believe and inspired from that belief you walk out a relationship with Him.

Well AGTG , I don't believe in a Universal Christian live , and I don't believe that the Baptize is giving u the automat Salvation , I do know that the Lord Jesus is my Savior and I only have to follow Him , but u must understand that I want to have a personal live with Him , for the moment it is not possible , I must change a lot in my life , maybe some people dream to a big house , a nice car , I dream to speak in Tongues and to have a real personal relation with my Savior , without living in a old minded and non Biblical Church . Please pray for the Romanian Pentecostal Church we are living hard spiritual times , we war 30 cousins in the church now there are maybe 10 , we make a lot of kids but we don't have. Biblical study , I'm 26 and I have not even once a Biblical study , our church puts a big stake on praying

Im the same as you Benjamin....I want to be able to converse with the Lord and speak in tongues with him. You might want to find another Pentecostal church that suits you...the one I am in we focus on everything...we have prayer meetings but we also have bible study as well...

Well I was a few times in a Austrian Pentecostal church , but they don't like foreigners , I hope that I will be able to move next year in USA , the people of our church are laying to much o traditions not the Bible , I hear a lot of times non Biblical things and that make me sad

Oh, I will pray for the Romanaian Pentecostal church, alright! After all, one of the founding Romanian Pentecostal church pastor's son blessed me this last year by helping me out when I needed a new car (he manages a dealership in the USA).
