I do believe in tongues. It is quite biblical, though how it is practised today is seemingly not.

Acts 2:4-8
"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?"

This scripture clearly states that the gift of tongues was real. However, not one person needed an interpreter. It was a language of man directed specifically toward persons who knew that language. Not the inane babblings of today which needs interpretation.

So yes, while I agree that speaking in tongues is biblical. I thoroughly view today's practise of it as demonic. The same inane babblings can be heard in certain satanic rites as demons are possessing their willing hosts.

(Yes, one day I will type my testimony again, so that I can share exactly how far God reached down to pull me to Himself. Praise Him for His mercy!)

After reading over the link you posted, I found it interesting that all the articles suggested for reading were only anti-tongues. Please be very careful attributing something to the enemy. For an interesting look at a different view.....try www.layhands.com

If, however, you would prefer reading only baptist viewpoints....try Rev. Billy Graham's The Holy Spirit.

On page 226 he says,"Although there is honest disagreement among Christians about the validity of tongues today, I personally cannot find any biblical justification for saying the gift of tongues was meant exclusively for New Testament times"

Page 233-34 says "There is a real (as contrasted with a counterfeit) gift of tongues. Many of those who have been given this gift, have been transformed spiritually, some temporarily, some permanently."

Page 234 "And those who forbid it (tongues) do the church a disservice because they appear to contradict the teaching of the apostle Paul."

If everyone speaking in the previous links, believe that the signs gifts were only given during the open-canon period.....then I suppose when the Lord said..."And it will come about after this that I will pour out my Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy and your young men will see visions." (Joel 2:28) He was referring to some time during the life of the disciples?? Not the end times, which I believe we are in?

And even Jesus Himself said "And these signs will accompany those who have believed; in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;" .... I know some conservative denominations ignore that comment...they say that there is dispute over the validity of that portion of Mark. If Mark ended on verse 8 as they like to suppose...Mark would have ended his wonderful book with the words....And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

I know the baptist don't like to believe in the sign gifts. I spent over 40 years in the southern baptist church. I now know many great southern baptist preachers....James Robison, John Osteen for two...found out the gifts are still given...and it changed their lives for the better. I've seen with my own eyes a teenaged girl going down the road to destruction, be filled with the Holy Spirit, given a prayer language (tongues) and been transformed into an on-fire, loving Jesus teenager. My family is southern baptist down to the core....but God stirred up the gifts in me.....I have received prophesy from Him many times and watched it come to past....I've been given words of knowledge about a stranger and used it to spread His love and kindness and witness about Jesus. I've anointed with oil and layed hands on a hopeless patient in the hospital....with my hands 'buzzing' almost..and seen the Lord heal overnight miraculously....I've had strange Hebrew sounding words come out of my mouth....just a few...to later see those words in the Strong's concordance.....words meaning....Father...Morning Star....Oh most high God....Since this stirring up....I can't stop talking about Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit. I share with people all the time and my focus is 100% the Lord and the Harvest. So let me say this.....Be VERY CAREFUL attributing 'sign' gifts to satan.....If you don't believe in them and say they are of the devil....then you are saying to ME....a lifetime card-carrying southern baptist .....that I am doing the work of the devil. My husband also was given a full prayer language to use whenever he wants during his prayer time....He also has turned into the spiritual leader, soaks up the Bible and speaks constantly of the Lord. We CAN speak that Jesus came in the flesh....our purpose is to lead as many to Jesus as possible and to set captives free.....I love the Lord with all my being and can assure you....my house IS NOT divided. Praise be to the Father, Son and Holy Ghost!! This is not intended to stir up debate..but to share my testimony. Just remember, God never invented a denomination. Pray about it....I know one southern baptist that did and it was amazing what God did. All I know is that I worship a powerful God....who is the same yesterday, today and forever.

I have never prayed in tongues, but I've known people who have. I don't know why alot of Baptists are against it. In fact, at my former church, one of our most devoted prayer warriors was kicked out of the church for it. :-(

*Edited to Add* I do not believe that not speaking in tongues means someone isn't "close enough" to Jesus Christ. I had a Charismatic woman tell me once that my future children would be born deformed because I was obviously not "right with God" because I didn't speak in tongues. Nice huh? I don't believe we are blessed with all of the gifts of the Spirit. If those who pray in tongues find it a means to bolster their relationship with Christ, then by all means, pray in tongues; however, I know of conferences where they supposedly teach you how you are supposed to pray to God in order to receive the gift. These men and women pray for three days straight to be blessed with the gift of tongues. Some of them receive, others don't and they are left wondering if they prayed "correctly". :(

Well, Eric....if you want to read all the verses about it...I would suggest going to www.layhands.com The man who supports this site takes all the verses about topics, discusses who they were directed to at the time, the original Hebrew or Greek meanings of the words etc and writes a sometimes long thesis on the topic. Also, if you want to read non-arguing comments about tongues...go to the spirit-filled -charismatic forum in this arena and do a search on tongues. As Billy Graham mentions in his book The Holy Spirit, there is a lot of division regarding tongues...people really freak out about it and always have. If it's used without love, then they are using it incorrectly. And yes, satan-worshippers and other non-Christians may speak in a counterfeit tongue....I remember reading the man who played Jesus on broadway in Jesus Christ Superstar said he was speaking in tongues quietly on stage cursing God...he was a non-believer. Now he is saved and uses tongues appropriately, as I understand. If it didn't have value, why counterfeit? We don't counterfeit pennies....only bigger bills of value. The same with the gifts of the Holy Spirit...if the enemy can get us in deception and offense over someone counterfeiting, we won't seek the gifts. The gifts can help in ministering, thus making you a bigger threat to the enemy. So be careful. Listen to the Lord. Stay in the Word. I do enjoy reading about various people and how they've used the gifts in accordance to the Word. My favorite is written by Robert Heidler called Experiencing the Spirit. He went to the Dallas Theological Sem. and didn't believe the gifts were for today. Until he got them and it changed his life and walk and ministry. The book is balanced and eye-opening. Remember....if hearing about Holy Spirit gifts causes your hackles to rise up...maybe one needs to ask themselves if it's because of something they were taught in their denomination. God never invented denominations.....He did give the word and I believe with ALL my heart and spirit.....if the gifts were not for today, it would have been spelled out loud and clear over and over to make sure we got the point.....with no confusion of interpretation. The people who believe tongues, prophesy and such passed will quote the verse in 1 cor. 13:8-10 that says tongues and prophesy will cease when that which is perfect comes....I interpret that to mean when Jesus comes. Because in Joel 2:28 God said "And it will come about after this that I will pour out my Spirit on all mankind and your sons and daughters will prophesy....." So if prophesy...which is a sign gift...is gone...how can this verse be true? I highly recommend Heidler's book...he was an 'unbelieving believer' until the Lord changed him overnight. Take care and feel free to p.m me. Praise God and blessings to you.

I believe speaking in tongues is possible, but the contemporary way of just babbling and barking like dogs and such, no, because thats notr what it is, speaking in tongues is spekaing in your own language and someone else hears it in their own,

The link I posted didn't have any articles at all, it was a link to a thread where we already discussed this issue. I think you might have been looking at something else. The thread was a good discussion of what kinds of tongues are of the enemy and which kind are of God. You might go back and look at it again and learn a lot. I know I did.

And by the way, I'm not baptist.

Blazing for Christ: If that be the case of speaking in our language why would Paul say he spoke in the language of angels and of men and we sepak in the mysteries of the Spirit and to ourselves when the interpretation was not available. If you spoke in your own language why would we need interpreters there.

Lambslove: I know about beating a dead horse but since I am a newby and have not had a chance to beat on this dead horse here I wanted to get some idea as to how Baptist thought of these things.

That's why I posted the link to the discussion we had just a couple weeks ago, a long, exhaustive discussion on the subject that should give you a very thorough look at what baptists and anabaptists think about the subject.
