Speaking curses over yourself?

If a person is teaching that Christians are subject to curses is teaching another gospel and could be underestimating the effectiveness of the born again state and there putting himself in serious danger of being well out of harmony with God.

I'm frequently surprised by some doctrine. Everything is a choice (this day). That never stops. As in Deut., the blessing comes from obedience to the voice of God. Although we have a different covenant, and the medium of the voice is no longer the letter, it is still a daily choice.

As far a curses go, have you ever been the recipient of some crazy maneuver behind the wheel? If you weren't renewed that day (another daily process), you might have reacted in the flesh and spoke out something that wasn't a blessing. That's a curse. That's the stuff that empowers the enemy to work in this world. He uses those in the world and if he can get through to you, believers. I've done it many times. I wish I could take it all back.

Lots of people dissing Jews too, and that definitely picks up a curse. You can actually find that right here on the forum! It's a choice.

Just because one becomes born again does not mean that he's incapable of uttering a curse (refer to the passage in James). Paul says "we" when he talks about cursing from same lips that he blesses from.

MUCH warfare is done for the enemy by supposedly well-intended judgmental believers, who speak capriously against what God is doing. That's why it's critical to bridle the tongue. What's the point if you're only blessing?

Check out some marriages. They speak after a spirit of strife and loose all sorts of fire straight from Hell. It all depends on if it's a spirit walk or a flesh walk, because your flesh doesn't deal too well with attacks that originate with someone who follows you around much of the time, who knows a lifetime of your weaknesses.

I've seen the filth it generates when someone speaks after the enemy. It's an oppressive curse. The Lord has spoken many times regarding curses and the work of the enemy.

I remember picking up a book at Christ for the Nations on curses; a great quickening as I held it in my hand. I had a lot of stuff set out against me. The whole Is 54 - no weapon prospering thing is a weapon against the curses of the enemy. If you don't wield the weaponry, it plays havoc on you.

I want to add here that proclaiming truth is a weapon that displaces what the enemy is doing. But as I said earlier, it's not always the enemy and sometimes we either don't take proper care of ourselfves, get out of the rest of God, etc. and it brings infirmity.

What I was talking about was getting things you don't ask God for and that is how the thread started out -- wondering if declaring something vocally resulted in its manifestation.

No, in the op, SJ was asked, by a friend, how he was, and then rebuked by that friend for saying that he was having problems with his back. The friend seemed to think that by mentioning problems SJ was speaking curses over himself, and told him not to do it. In fact SJ had genuine problems with his back - confirmed by an MRI, and he wanted to know where in Scripture we are told that expressing negative feelings/problems = speaking a curse over yourself.

I will continue to think that if someone speaks something negative or evil or slanderous, the devil can decide to enforce that malediction to make it happen.

He can, and probably will, try and may succeed.
But if someone wants to know how you are and you are going through a bad patch, are ill or things are going wrong, what's the point in not saying so? You were asked the question and you're answering it. Saying you have a bad back doesn't give you one; you're telling it how it is. And this is true when we're talking to God too. He already knows how things are, and wants us to be honest. There's nothing to be gained by saying "I'm fine Lord" when he knows you're crying inside. There are Psalms which speak about wanting death, or illness, for their enemies; there are also Psalms in which the author says, "my strength is gone", "my friends have left me" etc, and Psalm 22 says that God has deserted him. The Psalmists weren't rebuked for being honest, neither did their words create their problems.

That is likely to be what Job experienced -- the thing I feared most came upon me... Job 3:25

But it wasn't.
We are told in chapters 1 & 2 why Job's problems happened. The devil told God that of course Job was a devout and blameless man; he had a very blessed and easy life. The devil was certain that if Job suffered hardship it would be a different story and he would end up cursing God.
Job did lose everything, plus his health, cursed the day he had been born and wished that he was dead - but he didn't die, didn't curse God and God commended him for his attitude and rewarded him.

I had M.E. for 18 years. Saying "I've got M.E" didn't give me the illness, and saying "I am healed" didn't make it happen. God healed me first, then I declared it and told everyone.
