I don't like the thought of hitting a child, but then again I am not a parent and do not know if my opinion would change

When i took child physchology in highschool, i remebered that you must make sure that a child knows why they are being spanked when you spank them and you have to talk to them and show them what they were doing wrong and show them the correct way to do whatever it was. Otherwise, it doesn't really work.

Oh, and you know, it also depends on the temperment of the child too!

My daughter would do stuff knowing she would get a punishment and it might be a spanking, but she would explain that she felt it was worth it.

My son, you could just speak to him in a certain tone and he would burst into tears and NEVER do it again.

My mom had it down to a fine art. And she can do it with my son... I just come across 'talking real slow and soft' or fast and loud, I need the Bite.

LOL! If I knew what I did, I would teach you. My kids and DH also tell me I have a "look". Then, there is the foot tapping.

Now that they are all grown (with the exception of DH), they pick on me bad.

You are doing just fine, I am sure. Discipline with love, and keep those communication lines open. That is the main thing. I was always very, very honest with my kids about things I had done when I was their age. Some folks would be like, "Oh, they will think it is okay to do it!". I can honestly say that my kids have tried things but neither of them liked it or ever did it again. Plus, they came and told me about it later.

I do not believe in spanking my child.

We are not permissive parents though, we believe that our child receives consequences for her actions whether they are positive or negative ones. I have a soon to be 14 year old daughter who is absolutely wonderful! She has an easy going personality and learns that what she says and does will result in some action or reaction and she might not always like what happens. There is absolutely no need to ever hit my child with the type of discipline we've used consistently throughout her childhood. She's growing into a mature, responsible young lady of whom I'm very proud to call daughter

Have you watched those reality shows w/ the Nannys?
The parents don't even know how to raise them or discipline.. they let the kids run the house & are afraid they'll make their kids "feel bad" or the child "won't like them".

I think the last thing my mother was worried about growing up was whether or not I "liked" her.

I was spanked only a few times and my parents always told me why I was going to be spanked, and it was ussualy my mother who spanked me.
We also had "time outs" where I had to sit on the steps, for 15 minuets I think, but those were rare because when I did act up, not very often I was a good but hyper kid, it would either just be a stern talking to or something worth a spanking lol, I think it did me some good
