  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

That was what science was called back in his day.

To some extent, but the modern connotation of "science" is different than what Newton understood by the meaning of "natural philosophy". For example (as we've been discussing in another thread), "method" was not formalized until the latter part of the 19th century. Further, mathematics was not accepted for modelling the real world the way we accept it. Newton was revolutionary in doing so. As such, he used geometric and logical proofs to support his derivations through calculus to gain support for them. Even further, he worried about all kinds of ridicule that would be heaped on him for using a "method" that was different than his colleagues. His biggest concern was that gravity would be dismissed as an appeal to magic.

(edit: I should add that another difference in Newton's attitude was that natural philosophy was a way to better understand God by the study of his creation. Not sure too many scientists think that anymore.)
